ONEIDA – The winner of the annual October Domestic Violence Awareness Month Basket Raffle was Mark Edwards from Cazenovia College. Mark, enjoy your new Flip Video, Digital Frame and gift certificates!
The drawing for the basket was held Nov. 5th at the Madison County Department of Social Services, where Commissioner Mike Fitzgerald drew the winning ticket. As a result of the community’s generosity and effort by Dawn LaGreca who was instrumental in selling so many tickets, the Victims of Violence Program was able to raise $775, the best year ever.
The Victims of Violence Program & Madison County Department of Social Services would like to thank all the individuals who so generously bought raffle tickets. Also a big round of applause goes to the local agencies that so kindly donated the items that went into basket.
The purpose of the basket raffle was to raise awareness about domestic violence and to raise money for children affected by domestic violence in Madison County. Locally, in 2008, the Victims of Violence Program served 148 children directly affected by domestic violence or sexual abuse. Of those 148 children, 16 percent of those children stayed in the Victims of Violence safe dwelling. Transitioning in and out of a shelter can be a difficult experience for a child, so the money raised will be used to provide resources to make the transition a smooth and less traumatizing one.
