Salmon nets overtime goal for Morrisville State in win over Geneseo thumbnail

BATAVIA, N.Y. – Freshman forward Matt Salmon (Orillia, ONT) netted the game winner 3:11 into the sudden victory overtime period to lift Morrisville State College hockey to the 4-3 victory over SUNY Geneseo Saturday night in Batavia.

Kaz Iwamoto gave the Ice Knights the early 1-0 lead, netting the first goal of the night just 3:08 into the contest off a pass from Michael Forgione.

In the second period, Morrisville State exploded for three straight scores, the first just 4:12 into the period as Bobby Cass (Burlington, ONT) and Rob Sgarbossa (Campbellville, ONT) found defenseman Tom Longland (Dunnville, ONT) for the score.

Just over 20 seconds later, Salmon netted his first of the night to give the Mustangs the 2-1 advantage. Cass and Sgarbossa were credited with the assists.

In the 14th minute, Geneseo was whistled for a holding penalty and at 14:48, Derek Matheson (Durham, ONT) put the puck away extending the Morrisville State lead to two heading into the third.

Five minutes into the third, Geneseo’s Dan Brown brought the Ice Knights back to within one, netting the score off an assist from Jake Yard.

David Arduin evened the contest for the Ice Knights at 12:35, firing the puck past Morrisville State goaltender Caylin Relkoff (Grand Forks, BC) on the power play opportunity.

Morrisville State killed off two penalties late in the third and Relkoff withstood a fierce Geneseo attack to force the game into the overtime period, the Mustangs second of the weekend.

Geneseo fired two quick shots at Relkoff who turned both away and Chris Cerbino (Highland, NY) raced a rebound down ice, finding Salmon who turned and fired the game winner past Adrien Rubeniuk just 3:11 into the overtime period.

Relkoff saved 36 in the win for Morrisville State, as the Mustangs improve to 2-2 overall, 1-1 in State University of New York Athletic Conference (SUNYAC) action.

Cory Gershon saved 13 while allowing three goals for Geneseo, playing the first 34:48 and was replaced by Rubeniuk who tallied seven saves in the final 28:23. Geneseo falls to 2-4 overall, 1-2 in SUNYAC action.

The Mustangs return to the ice Friday, November 13, hosting SUNY Potsdam at 7 p.m. at the IcePlex on the Morrisville State campus. They host nationally ranked #1 Plattsburgh on Saturday.

Morrisville State begins active membership within the National Collegiate Athletic Association (NCAA), Division III in 2009-10 and is eligible for NCAA Championship Tournament play.
