Mustangs drop 1-0 heartbreaker to Wilson College thumbnail

MORRISVILLE, N.Y.­ – Morrisville State College women’s field hockey lost to Wilson College by one today, making their overall record 5-13.
 
The Mustangs started the game strong, outshooting the Phoenix eight shots to four in the first 35 minutes of play.  Both teams totaled an equal number of penalty corners, ending the first half with seven each. 
 
In the second half, Wilson shot three for the Phoenix with the Mustangs tallying nine.  Wilson’s keeper Nikol Grafnetterova (Prague, Czech Rep) saved a total of eight Mustang shots throughout the game, while Stephanie Smith (Cedarville, NY) had one. 
 
The Mustangs battled the Wilson College Phoenix through rain and mud for 68 minutes and 20 seconds with the scoreboard showing a tie game at 0-0.  In the last two minutes of the second half, Jami DeVanie (Boiling Springs, PA) netted the winning goal for the Phoenix with an assist from teammate Tara Fields (Berryville, VA).
 
With only seconds remaining, the Mustangs fought hard for a game-tying goal, pulling senior goalkeeper Smith to the circle for the last penalty corner. 
 
Lauren Bordonaro (North Tonawanda, NY) tallied seven shots for the Mustangs, with four on goal.  Jamie Anderson (Harpursville, NY) and Carolyn Sobol (Amherst, NY) added three shots a piece.  
 
The Mustangs play their final game of the 2009 season on Saturday, Oct. 31, at Hamilton College at 1 p.m.  
 
Morrisville State begins active membership within the National Collegiate Athletic Association (NCAA), Division III in 2009-10 and is eligible for NCAA Championship Tournament play.
