Morrisville women’s basketball ends first game with 53-35 loss thumbnail

(Morrisville, NY) The Morrisville State women’s basketball team lost their first game of the 2009 season, falling short by 18 points to the SUNY Canton Kangaroos.

The Mustangs started off strong, taking the lead less than five minutes into the first half after two baskets from Tekesha Hanson (Queens, NY).  With 8:50 left in the first half, the Mustangs were up by 12, with Hanson leading the Mustangs with 13 points.

At the end of the first half, the Mustangs trailed by one with a halftime score of 22-21.

In the second half, the Kangaroos hit the first shot, a two-pointer from Shannon LaFave (Ogdensburg, NY) with an assist from Abby Shoen (Waddington, NY), putting the Mustangs down by three with a score of 24-21.

With 16:16 left on the clock, the Mustangs trailed by five.  Five minutes later in the second half, the Kangaroos lengthened their lead with baskets from Brittany Crump (North Lawrence, NY), Julie Vander Wiel (Malone, NY) and Whitney Perkins (East Greenbush, NY), making the score 44-28, SUNY Canton.

The Mustangs ended the game with a 53-35 loss, putting their record at 0-1.  Hanson had a total of 21 points for the Mustangs along with one assist and three steals in 39 played minutes.  Thelma Picardo (Queens, NY) tallied 10 for Morrisville with Irena Longworth (Galway, NY) giving the Mustangs two points and five assists.

The Mustangs return to the court on Friday, Nov. 20, playing at SUNY Oswego at 4 p.m.
