To the Editor:
Problem gambling and substance abuse disorders often go hand in hand. Research suggests that almost fifty percent of problem gamblers also have a problem with alcohol or other drugs. Nation wide nine to thirty percent of people who have alcohol and/or drug problems also has a problem with gambling (www.samhsa.gov TIP 42 pg 246).
Problem gambling and substance abuse disorders share many of the same characteristics. People who are problem gamblers or have substance abuse disorders usually have a pre-occupation with the activity. They may also perform the activity to escape reality. Intense cravings to partake in the activity are also associated with problem gambling and substance abuse disorders. There is a need to increase the amount (of the substance being used or the money being gambled) to achieve the desired effect. People suffering from both addictions have the inability to stop their behaviors even when facing consequences (www.samhsa.gov TIP 42 pg 426).
There are a couple of major differences with problem gambling versus substance abuse disorders. It may be harder to recognize the signs of problem gambling for example there are no physical signs of problem gambling. Problem gambling is often referred to as the hidden disease. If you or someone you know has a problem with gambling or a substance abuse disorder New York State has a free hope line. The hope line offers information and resources for those who have concerns or questions about drugs, alcohol and problem gambling. The Hope Line number is toll free 1-877-8-HOPE-NY or visit www.nyproblemgambing.org .
