Madison County’s Open Farm Day Approaches

Madison County’s Open Farm Day Approaches thumbnail

The second annual Open Farm Day returns to Madison County on August 22nd, boasting 100% growth in participating, farms jumping to 23 farms, up from 12 last year.  Over 400 Central New Yorkers came out last year to Open Farm Day and the county anticipates a fifty percent visitor increase this year.

Open Farm Day is the brain-child of Becca Jablonski, Madison County’s Agricultural Economic Development Specialist.

“As a community we don’t really know where our food comes from – it’s just there at the grocery store.  I wanted to find a way to bridge the gap between our food producers and our consumers,” Jablonski said.

The full list of participating farms can be found at: www.madisoncountyagriculture.com/buylocalweek along with more additional information on Buy Local week activities.

Bee Tolman of Meadowood Farms participated last year and finds Open Farm Day “a great chance for the non-farming community to have access to what goes on a farm and to have a farmer explain the process.”

Get up close and personal with your food – come spend a day at the farm.

I have a question about open farm day. I would like to visit some sheep/goat farms on 8/22. I live at 5555 Bartlett Road in Lebanon NY. Would you please give me the names and addresses of the closest farms to my address that would have sheep/goats?

Please respond as soon as possible. I heard that if you visit more than a few there are prizes involved. Please let me know a little more about that when you email me.

    Thanks-

    Mary C. Charest
