Gorman Foundation to match dollar for dollar

Submitted by Luke Logan Keely

Hamilton – Community Bikes has received a challenge grant from the Gorman Foundation that matches all gifts from individuals, dollar for dollar, up to $5,000.

“This is a very significant grant,” said Community Bikes Coordinator Chuck Fox.  “We are extremely grateful to the Gorman Foundation for their support.”

Community Bikes is a not-for-profit project that collects and refurbishes bicycles for families in Madison County who can’t afford them. Working in partnership with the Community Action Partnership for Madison County and with other human service agencies, schools and churches, Community Bikes identifies families who can use a bike and provides them with a bike, helmet and lock.  In its first year, Community Bikes has placed more than 200 bikes.

Fox said that the organization’s goal is to place up to 500 bikes with families this spring, and to send up to 200 bikes to the Malawi Children’s Village in Africa.  Community Bikes relies on resources donated or volunteered from the community.

“We hope that the grant from the Gorman Foundation will spur many individuals in our community to make a gift,” Fox said. “A gift of $30 provides a bike, helmet and lock to someone in need in our community, and a gift of $100 delivers a new bike to an adult or child in Malawi.”
