Pelky New Nurse Manager at Community Memorial

By John D. Hubbard

Çindy Pelky’s mother thought her daughter would make a good nurse. She was right.
Pelky, new nurse manager for ambulatory surgery, MRI, nuclear medicine and GI at Community Memorial Hospital, is settling into her leadership role after a varied and intense career in nursing.

Growing up in Hubbardsville – she now lives with her own family, husband Ted and children Kayla and Kyle, 10, two blocks down the road – Pelky began her career as a Candy Striper at Community Memorial. She earned a bachelor’s degree in nursing at Utica College and worked for a year at Crouse Irving in the mid-90s before coming to Community Memorial. She moved again, working in the open heart unit at St. Elizabeth before starting her family and returning to Community Memorial where she has been assigned to the intensive care unit, ambulatory surgery and cardiology.

A hands-on manager, Pelky draws on her experience whether tending patients or leading her staff.

“It’s exciting,” Pelky said. “It is a different job than I’ve done but I am still able to jump in – do stress testing, help in GI, go to codes.”

Pelky oversees a staff of 12 to 14 and is most pleased that everyone works as a team.

“We all strive to make it quality care,” Pelky said. “Every day I see someone try to make it better. Our staff cares about Community Memorial’s reputation and is committed to giving special care. We make sure our patients are safe, satisfied and educated.”

In fact, Pelky has worked hard to improve pre-operative education and she and her staff are good about explaining exactly what is about to happen and what to expect.

“We are close knit and work well together,” said Pelky, who admits that leadership hasn’t been as easy as she thought.

Director of Nursing Diane Chase has every confidence.

“Cindy is a knowledgeable and caring nurse who goes the extra step,” Chase said. “Her experience is incredible and she can handle any situation.”

“There are problems to fix and it can be intense but everyone has been accepting and gives good feedback,” said Pelky the former Nurse of Distinction. “It’s great to come into work. This is a good place where we can provide quality care and the patients feel it.”
