Hamilton, N.Y. – The Colgate Bookstore and Hamilton Theater announce the Fall 2009 season of the Hamilton Book & Movie Club, beginning on Thursday, October 29 at 5:30 p.m. with books and movies featuring travel to Italy and France.  For more information about this season’s selections or to join the club, please visit www.colgatebookstore.com/bookmovie

The selected books/movies for the Fall 2009 (October – December) season are as follows:

November 29  – The Talented Mr. Ripley – Novel by Patricia Highsmith; 1999 film starring Matt Damon, Jude Law and Gwyneth Paltrow.  Set and filmed in the Italian Riviera, Venice, and Rome, this psychological thriller follows the path of Tom Ripley, a poor young man of dubious ethics who is hired to travel to Italy and persuade a wealthy playboy to return to the States and the family business.

October 19 – The Enchanted April – Novel by Elizabeth von Arnim; 1992 film starring Miranda Richardson, Joan Plowright, and Josie Lawrence.  Four dissimilar women in 1920s England, seeking respite from their unsatisfying lives and dreary English weather, rent a medieval Italian castle together for the month of April and find rejuvenation.  Whether or not the enchantment can carry into their lives and loves in the “real” world is the question.

December 10 – A Good Year – Novel by Peter Mayle; 2006 film starring Russell Crowe, Marion Cotillard, and Albert Finney.  A British investment broker inherits his late uncle’s vineyard estate in Provence.  He travels to France to supervise the sale of the property, but his plans are challenged by a local romantic interest and a young American who may have a better claim on the estate.

Members are encouraged to read the selected book in advance and then meet on the selected date at the Hamilton Theater to view the film based on that book. Club members have the opportunity to discuss the book and the movie at a dinner in the Colgate Bookstore immediately following the film screening.

The Book & Movie Club offers two subscription plans.  Full Members will receive their own copy of all three books for the season, free admission to the screening of all three films, and dinner during the three after-movie discussions, for a one-time fee of $48/season.  Basic Members receive free admission to the film screenings, and dinner during the after-movie discussion, for a one-time fee of $24/season.

For more information about these options or to join the club, visit www.colgatebookstore.com/bookmovie or call the Bookstore at (315) 228-7480.
