Hamilton Book and Movie Club announces winter 2010 season

By Heather Elia

(Hamilton) The Colgate Bookstore and Hamilton Theater announce the Winter 2010 season of the Hamilton Book & Movie Club, beginning on Thursday, January 28 at 5:30 p.m. with a “What’s Cooking?” theme — books and movies featuring stories from the kitchen, full of culinary delight and passionate cookery.   For more information about this season’s selections or to join the club, please visit www.colgatebookstore.com/bookmovie.
The selected books/movies for the Winter 2010 (January – March) season are as follows:
January 28  – Chocolat – Novel by Joanne Harris; 2001 film starring Juliette Binoche, Johnny Depp, and Judi Dench.
When beautiful, enigmatic Vianne sweeps into the pinched little French town and opens a chocolate shop across the square from the church, she begins to wreak havoc with the town’s Lenten vows.  Able to choose just the right confections to alleviate her customer’s discontents, she charms many of the villagers but angers others, leading to a dramatic confrontation pitting the lure of sensual pleasure against disciplined self-denial.
February 25 – Julie & Julia – Memoir by Julie Powell; 2009 film starring Meryl Streep and Amy Adams.
Julie Powell, nearing thirty and trapped in a dead-end secretarial job, resolves to reclaim her life by cooking, in the span of a single year, every one of the 524 recipes in Julia Child’s legendary Mastering the Art of French Cooking.
Her unexpected reward: not just a newfound respect for calves’ livers and aspic, but a new life, lived with gusto.
March 25 – Like Water for Chocolate – Novel by Laura Esquivel; 1993 film starring Lumi Cavazos and Marco Leonardi.  Set during the Mexican Revolution, this is the tale of Tita, who is denied marriage to her lover because of her domineering matriarch’s traditional belief that the youngest daughter must not marry but instead care for her mother until the day she dies.  Tita is only able to express her passions and feelings through her cooking, which causes the people who taste it to experience what she feels.
Members are encouraged to read the selected book in advance and then meet on the selected date at the Hamilton Theater to view the film based on that book. Club members have the opportunity to discuss the book and the movie at a dinner in the Colgate Bookstore immediately following the film screening.
The Book & Movie Club offers two subscription plans.  Full Members will receive their own copy of all three books for the season, free admission to the screening of all three films, and dinner during the three after-movie discussions, for a one-time fee of $48/season.  Basic Members receive free admission to the film screenings, and dinner during the after-movie discussion, for a one-time fee of $24/season.
For more information about these options or to join the club, visit www.colgatebookstore.com/bookmovie or call the Bookstore at (315) 228-7480.
