Amistad film and discussion part of abolition-themed weekend
Hamilton, N.Y. – The Colgate Bookstore will host a panel discussion about the 1997 Steven Spielberg film Amistad on Friday, October 23 at 7:40 p.m. in the Class of 2003 Events Room (third floor) at 3 Utica Street.
The discussion is free and open to the public. Refreshments will be provided.
The discussion will follow a public screening of the film at 5 p.m. on the same night at the Hamilton Theater (admission is $5, payable at the theater).
This event is being sponsored by the National Abolition Hall of Fame and Museum (NAHOF) and the Colgate Bookstore as part of the NAHOF Induction Weekend. More information is available at www.abolitionhof.org.

Amistad is based on the true story of a shipboard slave mutiny in 1839, and the legal battle that followed it. The Amistad Incident was a significant historical event of the nineteenth century, and its history and legacy are still honored after 170 years.
The panel will discuss the accuracy of the film’s events, the portrayal of historical figures Lewis Tappan and John Quincy Adams, and audience responses to the film.
