ORONO, ME – Stephanie Gardiner netted two goals and dished off two assists while Kelly Newton also chipped in two scores as Maine downed Colgate 7-1 in field hockey action, Sunday afternoon.
The Black Bears, 4-1 overall, struck four times in the opening half. Up 1-0, UMaine got the game winner as Jocelyn Mitchell tipped in a shot from Gardiner at 25:41. The Black Bears increased their lead 29 seconds later as Newton found the back of the cage with a turn around shot to the left corner. As time was expiring in the first half, Maine converted on a penalty corner when Molly Arute scored as the horn was about to sound with a shot off a rebound in front.
Down 7-0, Colgate got on the board at 61:01 as sophomore Erin Leon (Virginia Beach, Va.) fed Britany Schram (Freehold, N.J.) on the left post and the freshman banged it into the cage for her first collegiate goal. The assist was Leon’s first collegiate point.
Sarah Pedersen (State College, Pa.) surrendered four goals and made eight saves in 51:36 of work before Kirsten Lalli (Pound Ridge, N.Y.) came in to finish the contest. Brittany Fleck started for UMaine; played the first half and was credited with the victory.
Colgate, 0-5 overall, will return to action Friday afternoon as it hosts Lock Haven. The game, which starts at 4 p.m. at Tyler’s Field, kicks off a three-game Raider homestand.
