Jane Austen Book Club chooses Sanditon for March discussion

Jane Austen Book Club chooses Sanditon for March discussion thumbnail

Hamilton, N.Y. – The Jane Austen Book Club will meet to discuss the novel Sanditon on Saturday, March 20 at 2 p.m. at the Colgate Bookstore on 3 Utica Street.  The meeting is open to the public and club membership is free.  Copies of the book are available at the Bookstore at a 10% discount.

Sanditon is one of Jane Austen’s unfinished novels, which the author began just before her death in 1817.  The manuscript included only the first eleven chapters and was originally titled The Brothers.  The Book Club will discuss the version of Sanditon which has been completed by contemporary writer Juliette Shapiro, a British author and journalist who has penned several Jane Austen sequels.

Sanditon is the story of Charlotte Heywood who, following a chance meeting with Mr. and Mrs. Parker, accompanies them to their home in Sanditon, a sea-side village which her excitable hosts promise will be the future epicenter of society summers. On arrival, Charlotte finds herself confronted with a very new and all-but-deserted town that nevertheless begins to fill with holidaymakers – a cast of characters of varying degrees of absurdity and sense.
