Hamilton Public Library invites you to attend an evening of “Chili in Estonia” on Friday, October 23rd. Bruce Ward will be sharing his video documentary of the choral-singing tour of Estonia, Latvia, and Lithuania in which he participated this past July.
The presentation will feature video footage including the big Estonian National Song and Dance Festival, and selected video recordings from one of the concerts in which he sang.
According to Ward, “the Song Festival is an awe-inspiring event, which occurs every 5 years going back to 1869. Some 25,000 singers join together under one conductor, singing a mixture of traditional Estonian songs and newer songs composed for the occasion.
In addition to the singers, another 100,000 plus will gather on the lawn of the amphitheater to listen to the festival, which means that fully 1/10th of the country’s population come together for this event. The tradition of singing together is credited with helping bring the people together to resist and eventually overthrow Soviet rule in the early 1990’s, without bloodshed.”
This program will be held in the library’s Community Room and will begin at 6:30 pm. Attendees are encouraged to bring a pot of their favorite chili and the Friends of the Library will provide utensils, beverage, bread, and cookies for everyone.
