Hamilton Democrats Nominate Kuiper, Darby, Todd, Haight and Marcellus

Hamilton Democrats Nominate Kuiper, Darby, Todd, Haight and Marcellus thumbnail

(Hamilton) Bob Kuiper, who in the past was elected as a moderate Republican to offices in the Village and Town of Hamilton as well as in Madison County, has accepted nomination in 2009 by Hamilton Democrats, the Independence Party, as well as the independent “Good Government” party for the position of Hamilton Town Supervisor.

At the Town of Hamilton Democratic Caucus on July 27, Kuiper explained that he had always worked in a bipartisan way, but that he had changed his registration from the Republican Party to the Independence Party in 2006 because he disagreed seriously with the Bush administration. Recently, Kuiper changed his registration to the Democratic Party because of basic agreement with the Obama administration.

Bob Kuiper settled in Hamilton fifty years ago as a Korean War era veteran. Over the years he supported his family as a local businessman and certified appraiser. For many years he served on the board of directors of the Alliance Bank. Starting in 1970, Kuiper served the Village of Hamilton as Trustee, Mayor and Justice. Kuiper also served the Town of Hamilton as Justice (1977-1983) and as Supervisor (1984-1997).  He was for six years chairman of the Madison County Board of Supervisors (1988-1993). He also served as a member of the Central New York Regional Planning and Development Board, which honored him nine years ago in with a Citizenship Award.

Joining Kuiper in challenging the single-party constitution of the Hamilton Town Council are candidates Peter Darby of Earlville and Carolyn Todd of Hamilton, both also on the Democratic and Good Government ballot lines.

A native New Yorker, candidate for Town Council Peter Darby settled in Earlville 33 years ago. He had served in the Air Force following his years as a student (Wesleyan U. Conn & Indiana U.).  He ran a beef farm in Earlville for 10 years and has run his own carpentry business since moving to the region. Darby served 12 years on the Sherburne-Earlville School Board, including two terms as chair. He also served as member and president of the Earlville Opera House Board. Currently he is on the Steering Committee for the Southern Madison County Gas Coalition.

Also running for Town council is Carolyn Todd. She and her husband Bill retired here to his native Hamilton 10 years ago. She participates, volunteers, and offers leadership in many Hamilton organizations as well in statewide and regional groups like New Yorkers for Verified Voting and the Southern Madison Heritage Trust. Educated in communication arts in California and Wisconsin, Todd also has extensive experience in business, having worked in sales for 15 years with Lehman Commercial Paper, Inc., a subsidiary of Lehman Brothers, as well as in real estate management.

Donald Haight is a candidate for Town Justice, also on both the Democratic and Good Government lines.  Originally from Goshen, NY, he went to college at SUNY Oneonta and then taught high school history for 33 years at the Unadilla Valley School in New Berlin. He also coached football, wrestling and track there as well as in Hamilton, when his wife Pamela Schriber-Haight opened her interior decorating business here 12 years ago.

The Democratic Caucus also unanimously supported Republican Donald Marcellus in his candidacy for Highway Superintendent.  Marcellus spoke at the Democratic Caucus, seeking bi-partisan support.

Nominating an incumbent or a former
office holder is a big mistake.
