(Hamilton – Nov. 20, 2009) This Friday, Nov. 20 the Barge Canal Coffee Co. is pleased to present a double bill beginning with Swinging ‘Gates at 8 p.m. followed by hammered dulcimer player Karen Alley at 9 p.m.
Colgate’s only all female a capella group, known nationwide as the “Gates” have been entertaining for almost 30 years. Performing original arrangements of old time classics and new favorites as only they can.
Karen Alley started playing hammered dulcimer in 2004 when she purchased her first dulcimer at a folk festival. She was largely self-taught for the first year and now studies occasionally with master teachers in Baltimore, Columbus, and Chattanooga.
She began performing on her dulcimer at area churches in 2005, and has since performed in West Virginia, Ohio, Massachusetts, Kentucky, and North Carolina and in New York, as well as all over central Pennsylvania. Her repertoire ranges from sacred to traditional to original pieces. This past June, Alley won the Mid-East Regional Hammered Dulcimer Championships, and then placed fourth at the national championships in Winfield, Kan. in September.
Alley is a sophomore at Colgate, where she is studying geology and music.
The Barge Canal Coffee Co. is located at 37 Lebanon St. in Hamilton.
