I decided years ago not to get involved in partisan politics, but here I am, running for the Hamilton Town Council. Why?
For the past year and a half I have served on the steering committee of the Southern Madison Gas Leasing Coalition. I am convinced that the development of our natural gas resources will be the most important issue facing our town for the next fifty years. The Coalition is working to ensure that this is done in a careful way with safeguards for the property owners, our environment, and our abundant water supply, the full value of which we are only beginning to appreciate as we read about water shortages in other parts of the country and world.
The Town of Hamilton needs to prepare for this development now. I am running because I think I can help.
After spending four years in the Air Force and three years teaching high school English in England, my wife Margaret and I, with our two small daughters, Sarah and Beth, moved to the Hamilton area. We rented for one year in Poolville before buying the Harvey Bensley farm on Earlville Rd. in 1977.
Having chosen to settle in this beautiful valley 33 years ago, community service came naturally. Three weeks after moving here Sarah entered Nancy Heck’s Chenango Nursery School class, and I found myself on the board of that school. By the time Sarah was in the sixth grade I had graduated to the Sherburne-Earlville School Board, on which I served for twelve years, including several terms as President. The new elementary school was planned and built during my tenure as president.
I have had extensive experience with other matters that are relevant to the work of the Town Council, not only through serving on the school board and the Earlville Opera House Board, but also through running my small business.
Please vote for me on Nov. 3 so that I can continue to serve our community.
Sincerely,
Peter Darby, Earlville
