Dan Sweeney (New Canaan, Conn.) was a double winner and broke a  school freshman record, but it wasn’t enough as the Colgate men’s swimming & diving team dropped a 190-105 decision to Boston U, Sunday afternoon Nov. 8.  The Raider women also bowed to the Terriers 184-114.

Sweeney was one of four Raiders to grab individual firsts against Boston U.  The freshman swam a personal best 21.14 to touch first ahead of teammate Tucker Gniewek (Mountain Lakes, N.J.).  Ironically, Sweeney’s time established a new freshman record at Colgate, which was previously held by Gniewek at 21.19, which he posted back in 2008.  Gniewek’s has two times of 21.19 for his career at Colgate, which ranked tied for seventh on the all-time list.

Sweeney and Gniewek teamed with Robert Rutkowski (Lititz, Pa.) and Costas Hadjipateras (New Canaan, Conn.) to win the 400 free relay with a time 3:08.08, which ranks as the seventh best time in school history.

Hadjipateras and Casey Powers (Chappaqua, N.Y.) tallied the other two first place efforts in the 200 fly and the 500 free.  Hadjipateras touched with a winning time of 1:54.54, while Powers posted a winning 4:47.62 in the 500 free.

The Raiders had four notable second place efforts on the afternoon.  The team of Sweeney, Teddy Perley (Harrison, N.Y.), Hadjipateras and Gniewek posted a 1:36.19 in the opening event – the 200 medley relay.  Gniewek placed second in the 100 free (46.97); Devon Healy (New Canaan, Conn.) was second in the 200 IM (1:58.75), while Nick Burkus (Weston, Mass.) posted a score of 231.05 on the one-meter board.

In women’s competition, Lia Kunnapas (Hasbrouck Heights, N.J.) was the lone double winner for the Raiders as the freshman claimed both the 100 (57.55) and 200 (2:03.74)-yard back races.  Her time in the 200 now ranks eighth on the all-time Colgate list.

Erica Derlath (Garden City, N.Y.) posted a top-10 time by winning the 1000 free.  The sophomore touched with a 10:20.04, which ranks fifth on the all-time list.   The other wins came from Erin McGraw (Penfield, N.Y.) and Caren Guyett (Yorktown Heights, N.Y.), who captured the 200 free (1:52.27) and 500 free (5:01.14) races respectively.

McGraw tallied a pair of seconds in the 100 free and 100 fly, both performances landed her on the all-time lists for those events.  The junior registered the 10th fastest times in the 100 free (51.51) and 100 fly (55.31).  Emma Santoro (Fall River, Mass.) and Kim Pilka (Great Falls, Va.) each posted two second place efforts.  Santoro finished second in the 100 breast (1:07.03) and in the 200 breast (2:24.45), while Pilka took second in both diving events (237.68 in the one meter and 263.32 in the three-meter).

Wrapping up the second place efforts include Guyett in the 200 fly (2:06.10) and Derlath in the 200 IM (2:09.44).

Both teams will take next weekend off before returning to action November 22 at Dartmouth.  The meet starts at 11:00 a.m. It will serve as the last outing for the Raiders until January.
