Colgate Icers fall to #15 Nebraska Omaha

HAMILTON, N.Y. – Jeric Agosta scored twice in the third period as 15th-ranked Nebraska Omaha overcame a one-goal deficit to down Colgate 4-1, Saturday evening Oct. 17 at Starr Rink.

The three-goal loss snapped Colgate’s streak of 14 consecutive games determined by one goal or less dating back to last season.

Trailing 1-0, the senior capitalized on a give away in the Colgate defensive zone; broke in on Raider goalie Charles Long (Cleveland Heights, Ohio; went back hand to forehand to knot the game at 1-1 at 5:24.

Eddie DelGrosso gave the Mavericks the lead for good moments on the power play with a slap shot from the center point at 7:19. The goal broke a string of 24 consecutive Colgate successful penalty kills dating back to last season’s finale at Quinnipiac.

UNO closed scoring with two more tallied 46 seconds apart on even strength scores by Joey Martin and Agosta at 13:00 and 13:46 respectively.

After a scoreless opening period, Colgate got on the board at 13:59 of the second as Thomas Larkin (Cocquio Trevisago, Italy) sent a pass from out top to a camped out Christian Long (Cleveland Heights, Ohio) and the freshman buried a shot from just inside the right circle for his first collegiate goal. Sophomore Matt Firman (Fayetteville, N.Y.) was credited with a secondary assist for his first collegiate helper of his career.

Colgate had a chance to extend its lead with 2:30 left in the period as Brian Day (Danvers, Mass.) darted in on a breakaway, but his attempt was foiled by John Faulkner.

Faulker made 23 saves to improve to 3-0-1 on the season, while Charles Long made 32 saves in the loss, 13 of them coming in the second period.

Both teams went one of seven on the power play.

Colgate, now 1-1-2 overall, returns to action Friday evening Oct. 23 as it takes to the road to square off with 13th-ranked UMass-Lowell. Game is set for 7 p.m. at Tsongas Arena.
