Maureen Colligan (Odessa, Fla.) posted a team-best seven kills and Kaleigh Durket (El Dorado Hills, Calif.) added six, but it wasn’t enough as second seeded American swept third seeded Colgate 25-20, 25-17, 25-11 in the opening round of the Patriot League Volleyball Tournament, Saturday evening Nov. 20.
Colgate, which saw its season come to a close with its third consecutive winning season at 15-13, received a five-kill, team-best four-block effort from Casey Ritt (Colorado Springs, Colo.). Devon Applegate (Davidson, N.C.) led the charge defensively with 11 digs.
The loss also brings to a close the playing careers of three graduating seniors, including Meghan Fanta (Hillsboro, Wisc.). The senior finished with 18 assists and winds up her career with a school record 3,945 assists. Fanta’s performance moved her into sixth on the all-time Patriot League assist list, passing Army’s Elita Powell.
Claire Recht led American with nine kills and seven blocks.
The Eagles and top-seeded Army battled it out for the automatic berth to the NCAA Tournament Sunday afternoon.
