Bob Kuiper Once More for Supervisor

Bob Kuiper Once More for Supervisor thumbnail

To the editor:

Bob Kuiper served his community as a public servant for 30 years from 1970 to 2002, with a brief interruption a dozen years ago.  Never defeated at the polls, frequently running unopposed, he held nearly every elective position in the Village and Town of Hamilton.  He received many awards for community leadership and citations for distinguished public service (resume at www.hamiltondemocrats.org).

For six years as chair of the County Board of Supervisors he held one of the most important positions in the governance of Madison County.   Why would such a man, an avid sailor on Lake Ontario who just returned with his family from a cruise on the Baltic Sea, want to serve the Town of Hamilton once more as supervisor?

The answer lies in his commitment to service above self and recognition of the challenges facing our town and county.  They require experienced leadership with a team of younger men and women equally committed to public service.  Retired after 50 years in Hamilton as businessman and appraiser, his wife and friends sensed that he was not ready for a contented life without public responsibilities.

A former moderate Republican, he is running as a Democrat, endorsed by the Independence Party. His shift in party allegiance was gradual but not unexpected for someone never known as an ideologue or partisan warrior.  Ten years ago he favored Colin Powell for President; now he admires Barack Obama for his vision and inspired leadership.
