Abolition Lyceum

(Hamilton, NY) In the tradition of information sessions of the 19th Century, the National Abolition Hall of Fame and Museum presents an Abolition Lyceum at each of its annual October events. Milton C. Sernett, Ph.D., professor emeritus of African American Studies and History, Syracuse University, has designed and will conduct the lyceum, a public lecture and discussion on the history of American abolition from the Colonial period through 19th C. abolition activities ending with the outbreak of the Civil War.

Dr. Sernett provides Lyceum II Freedom Now!: Garrisonian Immediatism and Abolitionist Ends and Means at 3 p.m. Sunday, October 25, 2009 at the Colgate University library.  Sernett illustrates his lyceum with many visual images collected during his three decades of teaching. His illustrated guidebook accompanies the lecture. The next three programs in the lyceum series are “Abolitionist Allies, Freedom Seekers, and the Underground Railroad” on October 23, 2010, “Abolitionists, Politics, and the Law” in 2011, and, finally, “Abolitionists, John Brown, and the Civil War” in 2012.

Sernett is a member of the Cabinet of Freedom for the National Abolition Hall of Fame and Museum (NAHOF) and on the Advisory Council for the National Underground Railroad Freedom Center. He has published several books on abolition: Harriet Tubman: Myth, Memory, and History, North Star Country: Upstate New York and the Crusade for African American Freedom, Bound for the Promised Land: African American Religion and the Great Migration, Black Religion and American Evangelicalism, Abolition’s Axe: Beriah Green, Oneida Institute, and the Black Freedom Struggle.

The Freedom Now! Abolition Lyceum concludes a weekend of activities including a debut of a film on Lydia Maria Child, Amistad movie and panel discussion, symposia on abolition, keynote by Frederick Douglass, induction of Lewis Tappan and Theodore Dwight Weld, and a Magpie concert on John Brown’s Raid at Harpers Ferry.

Lyceum reservations are limited. (Reservations include a copy of the guidebook.) Twenty dollar reservations are required by October 15 to the National Abolition Hall of Fame and Museum, 5255 Pleasant Valley Road, Peterboro NY 13134-0055.
