EOH Galleries to Open New Exhibits

(Earlville, NY) The Earlville Opera House Arts Center opens two new exhibits: “Taut” by Susan McCann and “Recent Paintings by Warren Bunn II” on Saturday, November 14th from 2-4pm with refreshments and a chance to hear more about the work from the artists.

Susan McCann’s art in the EOH East Gallery concentrates on memories and connections to her native Mississippi. She uses mediums ranging from animation and video to drawing and sewing. Susan received her MFA in Multimedia at Mississippi State University. She lives and works in Brooklyn, New York.

“I grew up on a horse farm in rural Mississippi and much of my current work is informed by the things I witnessed and experienced as a young child. Some of my most vivid memories come from watching my father halter breaking a colt. Halter breaking is a technique used to “break” a colt and accustom it to wearing and being handled by a halter. It involves tying the colt to a donkey (typically a very stubborn animal) and letting the colt thrash and beat about until it is “broken” and submissive. This process sometimes takes days but in the end the colt always breaks down becoming a dutiful and obedient animal. I have often thought that halter breaking is analogous to the sparring that children and parents go though to find some sort of common ground upon which to stand.” The works in “Taut” are inspired by the violent battle between the donkey and colt that parallels the parent and the child, the father and the daughter. In the EOH Arts Café Gallery, see new paintings by Warren Bunn II, who grew up in the local community, and now lives in Trumansburg, NY and works as the Registrar for the Corning Museum of Glass. Warren writes: “For me, it is important that the viewers write their own story for each work…I think of the scenes and characters in my work as templates or sets for a play in which the viewer is asked to write the script. It always amazes me that people can look at the same work and have completely different stories and feelings.”

The community is invited to attend the opening, on November 14th from 2-4pm with refreshments with an artists’ reception (free). The exhibits run through January 2, 2010.
