(DeRuyter, NY) The first Tioughnioga Winter Carnival will be held Jan. 14 to 17, 2010 in DeRuyter. Community members, organizations, businesses and DeRuyter Central School have joined together to plan a series of events enjoying the winter wonderland over two evenings and two full days. All events are open to the public. Most events are free.
A Family Community Dance will be held at the DeRuyter Central School, 711 Railroad St. from 6:30 to 10:30 p.m. on Saturday Jan.16. “Sundown,” a band from the Norwich area, will play a wide-variety of music, and the DeRuyter Central School Fine Arts Department will have several performances as well. The local Ruritans have sponsored the band for the evening. Activities for children are planned as part of the dance.
Refreshments will be available for purchase.
Additional weekend activities include The Barrigar Brothers, finger-picking, world-renowned guitarists who sing and play a wide-variety of music. They will perform live at the Red & White Café Friday Jan. 15 at 7:30 pm. Admission will be charged.
A Children’s Snowman Building Contest will be held on Saturday from 9 to 11 a.m. at Citizens Bank. The bank will supply arts and crafts materials and award prizes at no cost.
The Chili Contest will also be held on Saturday from 11 a.m. to 1 p.m.at the Red & White Café. Enter your pot of chili. Vote with your pennies. “Votes” benefit the DeRuyter Library.
DeRuyter is located in southwest Madison County on Route 13. Communities include the Village of DeRuyter and the hamlets of Cuyler, Sheds, Lincklaen, Lincklaen Center and surrounding area. The area is gifted with several scenic valleys, a beautiful lake and outdoor activities year round.
