Work Day Reports
Saturday, November 14th: Saturday’s main thrust was the house exterior. The exposed basement walls were professionally parged with a smooth coating by Paul Doran (we love the professionals – any drywall pros out there?) Also, the front porch was installed, and volunteers (working mostly from ladders) worked to side the house in beautiful grey siding with white trim. Rod Collins expects it will take a couple more workdays to finish.
Inside the house, Fred and Jolene Cleaver were busy installing electrical wire.
Colgate Chapter of Habitat for Humanity volunteers included familiar members Mike Palmer and Laura Stagnaro-Green, and also a first-time volunteer, Josh Smeltzer. Josh is from Portland, Oregon, and like Laura, is a Peace and Conflicts major.
A lunchtime feast of Mac n’ cheese, pasta salad, cranberry bread and pumpkin bread was provided by Mary MacLane. Cookies and brownies were available in abundance from Frank Kaylor and Debi Collins. Erin Taylor, our friendly neighborhood explorer, also brought cookies baked by her mom, Heather. Claire Grasmeyer brought her coffeemaker in to take the chill off.
8-Cent Bottle Return in Chittenango Takes Habitat Donations
Madison County HFH has an account at the 8-cent Bottle Return store on Genesee Street (next to the Emerald City Grill) in Chittenango. During the busy holiday season, you can simply tell the staff that your returnables are for Habitat, and they’ll count them and put them on the account. No waiting!
Is Habitat on Your Gift List?
All gifts to Madison County Habitat for Humanity are tax-deductible, and donation receipts are provided. If your employer has a matching gift program, consider taking advantage of this to double your gift. Copies of Madison County HFH’s 501(C)(3) certification are available upon request. If you support United Way, you can designate a portion of your giving to go directly to our organization (even if it is not listed with the main choices). Email us if you have any questions.
Habitat Herbie Gets a Report Card from OCM BOCES
As you may recall, Jeff and Myrne Markley donated a ’69 Volkswagen some time ago, and we hope to use the car as a fundraiser (either as a promotional icon, and/or as a future raffle prize). Herbie needs a bit of work to be road-ready and beautiful again, so the students at BOCES have taken on the challenge of working on him. Automotive Instructor Sam Azria has provided a “report card” — a short list of parts that Herbie needs, that is! Once those items are provided, the real work begins. We can’t wait to see the results!
Thanksgiving Holiday
Due to the Thanksgiving holiday this week, no work will be performed at the site this weekend. The Leadership Committee and Board of Directors for Madison County Habitat for Humanity would like to wish you all a happy, safe and bountiful Thanksgiving. We are very thankful for all the volunteers who have donated their time and energy and for the many supporters who have donated funds and in-kind gifts to support the Chittenango build. Blessings to you all.
Thanksgiving Thought from Dennis Doerr:
MasterCard has it right. Some moments and experiences are “priceless”. They usually revolve around family, service, and celebrating life. That’s what Habitat is all about. Building a house costs money, takes time, and requires sacrifice, but the product is far more than a house, it’s a “priceless” gift for a family. How can you put a price tag on the life Jessie and her kids will share in their new home? You can’t, it’s priceless. We have the privilege of investing in the “priceless”. What a great reason to give! What a great reason to give thanks!
What’s Next?
Saturday, November 28: NO WORKDAY!
Saturday, December 5: Continue Work on Siding
