MORRISVILLE, N.Y. – Visiting Buffalo State College Bengals scored two goals in the opening period and matched the Mustangs in each additional, en route to the 6-4 State University of New York Athletic Conference (SUNYAC) victory over Morrisville State College Friday night in Morrisville.
Nick Petriello (St. Catharines, Ontario) gave the Bengals the one goal lead midway through the first period, netting one of three Buffalo State power play scores, off an assist from D’Arcy Thomas (Gatineau, Quebec) and Ryan Ramage (Fort Erie, Ontario) at 11:04.
Joel Sheppard (Pefferlaw, Ontario) added a second power play score for the Bengals in the 18th minute, giving Buffalo State the two goal advantage at the break. In the second, Morrisville State’s Bobby Cass (Burlington, Ontario) brought the Mustangs within one after just 25 seconds of play, before Geoff Matzel (Chittenango, NY) added a second score at 4:42 to even the contest at two with a shorthanded score.
Justin Knee (Centralia, Ontario) notched the third Bengals score in the sixth minute, and Petriello added his second of the night six minutes later as Buffalo State regained the two goal advantage midway through the period. At 13:52, Andrew Alarie (Carlisle, Ontario) found Dana Calderone (Bronx, NY) for the third Morrisville State goal, cutting the lead to one, before Mike Luzarraga (Sugarland, TX) netted a shorthanded score for the 5-3 Buffalo State advantage at the end of two.
Six minutes into the final period, Adam Laite (Port Sydney, Nova Scotia) brought the Mustangs to within one, netting the score off an assist from Tom Longland (Dunnville, Ontario) and Stefan Carnegie (Woodbridge, Ontario), but they couldn’t find a fifth score as Morrisville State only managed to get off five shots over the final 14 minutes.
Trevor McKinney (Oakwood, Ontario) secured the win for the Bengals with their third power play score of the night with 16 seconds remaining in the contest. Morrisville State’s Caylin Relkoff (Grand Forks, British Columbia) recorded the loss in net, saving 13 in 48 minutes of play.
Mike Will (Lewes, England) saved six and allowed one goal in 12 minutes for the Mustangs. Alan Fritch (Saginaw, MI) had 35 saves in net for the Bengals, who improve to 3-8-1 overall.
Morrisville State (3-6-0, 2-5-0 SUNYAC) returns to the ice tomorrow, hosting SUNY Fredonia at 7 p.m. in the IcePlex.
