CAZENOVIA, N.Y. – A late push by the Cazenovia College women’s soccer team against the Penn State Berks Nittany Lions to tie the game up and send it in to overtime came up empty as they fell to the visitors, 2-1, Saturday afternoon.
Cazenovia fell to 0-5 on the season, but managed to avoid the shutout for the first time in five tries. Berks improved to 2-0 overall with the win.
Freshman Megan McDermott (Greene, NY/Greene) scored the lone goal of the game for the Wildcats. Junior goalie Brittany Westcott (Oneonta, NY/Charlotte Valley) registered 10 saves and allowed two goals in 90 minutes in the net. Brooke Kern and Shannon Smith each had a goal for the Nittany Lions, while Ariel Fuentes was credited with an assist.
Berks got on the board in the 9th minute on an indirect kick by Fuentes. Fuentes crossed the ball to Kern who scored on a header for the early 1-0 lead. Smith added another score before the half in the 30th minute on a goal from straight out. Berks led 2-0 at the break.
Neither team scored in the second half until McDermott put one in for the Wildcats in the 82nd minute on a high-arching direct kick. Cazenovia played with a sense of urgency for the next seven minutes, feeling a chance to grab the momentum. However, they were unable to score and ended the game in defeat.
