Supports Riley for Sheriff thumbnail

To the Editor:

Recently, Ronald Cary, long time Madison County Sheriff,  retired leaving the Sheriff’s position vacant. Two candidates have come forward to seek the position and they have a very short time to become known before Election Day. Both candidates are good men and have adequate qualifications for the job but one of them, Allen Riley, has outstanding qualifications.

I am a lifelong Republican and once served as Chairman of the Madison County Republican Committee, but in this election, I am supporting Allen Riley who is running as a Democrat.

I have known Allen for more than 25 years, and during all of those years, he was a member of the New York State Police.  He served in every capacity imaginable as a New York State Trooper, including criminal investigations of every type (even homicide) investigations. He was a patrolman doing motor vehicle work throughout Madison County. He was on the K-9 unit dealing with explosives and narcotics (and was trained in all aspects of terrorist threats). He was trained to handle gambling, gaming and wagering matters. He has been a fraud and money laundering investigator, investigated aircraft crashes and sexual abuse matters, and he was cross-designated as a U. S. Customs Narcotics Officer.

He also served as a Field Training Officer, training recent academy graduates, observing their actions in the field before he was satisfied they could serve on their own.

Allen is a lifelong resident of Madison County.  He spent his early life in Oneida and moved to Canastota where he graduated from high school, he attended SUNY Morrisville before graduating from the New York State Police Academy in 1983.  Many years ago, he bought a farm in Lebanon where he still resides.

On a personal note, anyone who has met or been associated with Allen Riley knows he is a man of great personal character. He is a true gentleman. Allen and his wife, Carol, have been married for 21 years, and they have two daughters, the oldest of whom is a freshman at Dartmouth College.

Allen Riley is not a partisan politician. He is an outstanding citizen of our county and has all the qualifications to be the best Sheriff this County has ever had. I am sure everyone who knows him will be voting for him, and I urge those of you who do not know Allen to make an effort to meet him. Once you do, I am sure you will feel as I do that he is the best candidate imaginable for the position of Madison County Sheriff.

Sincerely,

Peter W. Mitchell, Cazenovia
