Opening reception on December 8.
The Gallery at Cazenovia Public Library will present the work of Cazenovia artist and teacher Merrill A. Bailey (1909-1981) December 4, 2009 – January 28, 2010 .
Watercolors representing four decades of active painting by Mr. Bailey, as well as Christmas cards, sketches, and calligraphy will be on display in the library’s gallery.
Merrill Bailey taught at Cazenovia High School from 1935-1971 and was an art teacher and instructor of mechanical drawing.
Bailey’s paintings capture the rustic beauty of the area barns and landscapes in transparent watercolor.
“Perhaps, Mr. Bailey’s greatest legacy,” explained exhibition coordinator Dan Tennant, an artist and former student of Bailey, “was enabling us who remain, to see the beauty of our rolling hills, woods, streams and old barns. Most of the barns he painted are no longer standing; his brush captured them for future generations.”
The Cazenovia Public Library would like to thank those individuals who generously allowed the library access to their collections.
The exhibition is free and open during regular library hours: Monday – Friday 9 a.m. – 9 p.m.; Saturday 10 a.m. – 5 p.m. The public is encouraged to come and see this superb display and enjoy the rare opportunity to experience the work of Merrill A. Bailey.
There will be an opening reception at the library from 6:30 – 7:30 p.m. on Tuesday, December 8, 2009, followed by a gathering at the Lincklaen House’s Seven Stone Steps, 79 Albany Street. Bailey created a series of oil painting for the Steps in the 1940’s.
For additional information on the exhibition, please contact the Cazenovia Public Library, 100 Albany Street, 655-9322 or gallery coordinator, Patti Christakos, 655-9785.
