Stepping Back in Time: Lorenzo Summer Camp Planned for July 19 through 23
(Cazenovia, NY) For the sixth summer running, The Friends of Lorenzo will sponsor summer camp for 8- to 11-year-olds at the Rippleton Schoolhouse, located on the grounds of Lorenzo State Historic Site.
Originally constructed c. 1814 and moved to Lorenzo in 1997, the Schoolhouse has been carefully restored to its 1880s appearance and sets the backdrop for a number of educational programs throughout the year.
This July, students will explore late 19th-century rural education and related themes while attending “Footprints of an Upland Community: Community & Schoolhouse Experience.”
Camp educator Barbara Cook has more than three decades of elementary teaching experience in Central New York, and for the second year running is coordinating this summer’s session and will again be portraying Miss Buckland, the 1880s schoolmarm at Rippleton.
Themes presented will include 19th-century costumes, education, leisure activities, crafts, history, transportation, nature and art. The week’s activities will culminate on Friday with an old-fashioned ice cream social.
All required activity materials are covered by the program fee of $150 for the week ($135 for Friends of Lorenzo members), and students must bring their own lunch; snacks will be provided.
An Evening of Opportunity at Lorenzo: Learn More About Volunteering at the Museum
Interested in history, interior design and decorative arts, one-room schooling or staging special events? Then The Friends of Lorenzo and The Lorenzo Docent Corps are looking for you.
Whether currently working, going to school or retired, there are a variety of opportunities waiting to be filled by new volunteers at Lorenzo. Docent Corps Co-Chairs Susan Anthony and Linda Smith and Friends President Lisa Brownback cordially invite interested parties to attend a free evening presentation and enjoy a tour and light refreshments at Lorenzo on Tuesday, May 18 at 6:30 p.m.
Over the last four decades, The Lorenzo Docent Corps has provided hundreds of hours of service annually by offering tours for both individuals and groups, and by assisting with public programs. From interpreting the historic period rooms in the Mansion to assisting with school lessons at the Rippleton Schoolhouse and performing research and documentation, volunteer docents play a key role in making history accessible to the public.
Incorporated in 1975, The Friends of Lorenzo has actively provided support for The Docent Corps and has helped to make restoration efforts, educational programming and special event activities possible at Lorenzo through a variety of fundraising efforts.
For more information about how to become a docent and to register for the “Evening of Opportunity” on May 18 (registration deadline is May 10), contact Sharon Cooney at Lorenzo at 315- 655-3200.
