CAZENOVIA, N.Y. – The Medaille College Mavericks scored 54 points in the paint and held a 44-34 rebounding advantage to hand the Cazenovia College men’s basketball team its fourth consecutive loss to start the season Saturday afternoon at the Stephen M. Schneeweiss Athletic Complex.

The loss dropped the Wildcats to 0-4 overall on the young season, while Medaille’s record stays unblemished by improving to 5-0.

The Mavericks slowly built their lead from the onset of the contest after trailing 2-0 on the first basket and went up by 12 points on three separate occasions in the first half before taking a 40-29 lead into the break.

Medaille opened the second half with a quick 5-0 run to extend their lead to 16 points with just over two minutes gone by. The Wildcats struggled to stop the Mavericks underneath the bucket and failed to cut the lead to single digits the rest of the way.

Sophomore Bryant Winans (Afton, NY/Afton) led Cazenovia with 17 points in the loss and was 5-of-8 from deep. Junior Cameron Smith (Honeoye Falls, NY/Honeoye Falls-Lima) added 10 points as the only other Wildcat in double figures. Junior Andrew Jensen (Endicott, NY/Union-Endicott) had eight rebounds in 14 minutes off the bench to lead Cazenovia’s effort on the glass.

Medaille got 21 points apiece from Keith Hack (Hopewell Junction, NY) and Ron Malicki (Machias, NY) on the offensive end in the win. Hack also hauled in a game-high 14 rebounds for the double-double.

The Mavericks shot 56 percent from the floor in the victory and held the Wildcats to just 34 percent shooting. Medaille’s inside play was the key to victory as they held a 20-point edge in points in the paint.

Cazenovia will host Alfred University on Tuesday at 8:00 p.m. in their next outing. Medialle is home to Penn State Behrend on Monday.
