CAZENOVIA, N.Y. – Five first half goals by the Baptist Bible College Defenders, including three by sophomore Sandy Richie, proved to be more than enough to get past the Cazenovia College women’s soccer team, 5-1, Monday afternoon.
With the win, Baptist Bible pushed their overall record to 1-3. Cazenovia dropped to 0-6 with the loss.
The lone goal of the game for Cazenovia was scored by freshman Jenna Heffernan (Ballston Spa, NY/Ballston Spa), her first of the season. Baptist Bible’s other two goals were scored by freshmen Laurie Plante and Jocelyn Mantz with an assist coming from sophomore Carly Harper.
The Defenders first goal came as a result of a corner kick just three minutes into the contest. Harper found Plante in front of the goal, where she headed it into the back of the net for the 1-0 lead. Thirteen minutes later, Mantz scored to push the Defenders lead to 2-0. Richie then scored three consecutive goals in a flurry, with her first coming in the 21st minute and last coming in the 26th minute. The Defenders went into the half up, 5-0.
Heffernan’s goal was the only score of the second half, coming in the 79th minute to avoid the shutout.
Junior Brittany Westcott (Oneonta, NY/Charlotte Valley) recorded 13 saves and allowed five goals in 90 minutes of action. Baptist Bible used three different goalies throughout the contest. Melanie Williams started the game and lasted 33 minutes without seeing a shot. Cierra Byron came in for the next 39 minutes and stopped two shots, while allowing no goals. Charity Smith relieved Byron for the remaining 17 minutes of the match and allowed one goal.
Cazenovia will face Wilson College on the road on Saturday at Noon in their next contest.
