‘Be a Pirate’ Celebration Planned at the Cazenovia Public Library

‘Be a Pirate’ Celebration Planned at the Cazenovia Public Library thumbnail

(Cazenovia, NY) “Ahoy, mates. What are you waiting for? Shine your shoes, put on your best pirate scowl, and come on over to the Cazenovia Public Library for a pirate celebration.”

On Friday, September 18th, all treasure-seeking children ages 5-10 are invited to get decked out in their favorite pirate costume, if they want, and join their fellow pirates from 3:15 to 5:00 pm in the Library Community Room.

The activities kick off with Pirate Pete’s Talk Like a Pirate by Kim Kennedy. Accompanied by the puppet Barnacle Bart, who is the meanest pirate on the Barbary Coast, Director Betsy Kennedy will share the humorous story of Pirate Pete, who is searching for a crew for his new ship, but, of course, not just any crew will do.

Pirate crafts and tattoos will be part of the adventure as well as walking the plank and going on a treasure hunt. All will find pirate surprises along the way as well as the discovery of a really rich treasure in a selection of pirate books to borrow.

Digging for treasure in books, pirates will find Mem Fox’s Tough Boris, who is a mean, greedy old pirate—tough as nails, through and through, like all pirates. Or is he?  And Pirates by C. Drew Lamm, is a wicked story guaranteed to keep young pirates hooked until the surprise ending. Then find Emily Arnold McCully’s The Pirate Queen, a swashbuckling tale of Grania O’Malley, Ireland’s famed lady pirate.

Now step aboard, buccaneers and book lovers, for hilarious adventure on the high seas with Henry and the Buccaneer Bunnies by Carolyn Crimi. Aboard a ship called the Salty Carrot, this wild, rowdy band of buccaneer bunnies is led by Barnacle Black Ear, the worst bunny brute of all time.

But, if Fluffy, the Scourge of the Sea by Teresa Bateman sounds like your kind of treasure, then come aboard and find out how Fluffy uses all of his quick poodle wit, fetching style, and high-class tastes to defeat the scurvy pirate captain and meanest mutt on the high seas. And keep digging; book treasures never ends. ARRR!

Pirates and their families are invited back to the Library Community Room at 7:00 pm for the VeggieTales movie The Pirates Who Don’t Do Anything. Come along as Larry the Cucumber, Mr. Lunt, and Pa Grape find themselves on the ride of their lives as they are mysteriously whisked back to the time when pirates ruled the high seas. Rated G and running for 86 minutes, this movie is “a swashbuckling good time for the whole family.” Free popcorn is part of the treasure.

This celebration is free and open to the public. No “pieces of eight” needed.
