The Dolly Parton Imagination Library Comes to 13032 Residents

Canastota Public Library News

(Canastota, NY – March 2012) The Canastota Public Library will be signing up children in the 13032 Zip Code to be a part of the Dolly Parton Imagination Library at the Canastota School District’s Health and Wellness Fair during March.

Through the Dolly Parton Imagination Library, preschool children and their families in the Canastota area will be able to receive the gift of a specially selected book each month.

There is no cost for this program and families will be able to sign their children up for this great resource at the Canastota School District’s Health and Wellness Fair: A Community Celebration on Thursday, March 15 from 6 to 8 p.m. The only requirement is that the children be between the ages of birth and 5 years old and reside in the 13032 area code.  Interested parents and children should stop by the Canastota Public Library’s booth for more information and to register their children.  If families are not available to attend the Health and Wellness Fair to sign up, they should stop in at the Canastota Public Library at 102 W. Center St. to pick up a registration brochure.

Dolly Parton began this program in her county in 1996.  Since that time nearly 17,000 communities in the United States and Canada are involved in Dolly-sponsored library/literacy programs.  By mailing high quality, age-appropriate books directly to their homes, Dolly wanted children to be excited about books and to feel the magic that books can create. Moreover, she could insure that every child would have books, regardless of their family’s income.

Canastota was selected as the initial site for the Dolly Parton Imagination Library by the Coalition.  Since there are so many day care providers and day care centers in the area, the Dolly Parton Imagination Library could really make a difference in the lives of children in this community.   Currently, the Dolly Parton Imagination Library for the 13032 area code is possible through a grant to the Madison County Literacy Coalition from the Central New York Community Foundation.

March In To The Library

Canastota Public Library news

By Elizabeth Totten

(Canastota, NY – March 2012) Historically, March was considered to be the beginning of the Roman ‘work year.’  In thinking about that, I am wondering if it isn’t too late to think of March as a new beginning for us.  Surely spring is right around the bend and we’ll soon see the trees begin to bud and the green of flowers reach through the earth to extend their leaves to the sun.

So I am considering March, a first of the year for me, as well.  And, at the library, there are always ways to reinvent oneself.  In addition to our books, magazines, and videos, we have some great programs planned for the month of March.  Many of these are programs that we can use to learn something new about art, about ourselves, about our community.

During March, there will be an art exhibit at the Canastota Library of the works of Stephen Perrone (acrylics) and Ralph Martell (photography).  While Martell takes you along on his journeys throughout the world, Perrone will take you to the far reaches of his mind.  An artist’s reception will be held on March 6 at 7 p.m. in the Canastota Library’s Lawson Community Room.  The art exhibit and reception are free and open to the public.

Since March is Women’s History Month, Liz Metzger and Tish Dickinson will present “From Quill to Blog.”  The duo will explore the viewpoints of women expressed in their writing over the past millennium.  From Abelard’s Heloise and the extraordinary Hildegard of Bingen, through the reigns of Elizabeth I and Victoria, to pioneer women and those who lived through the Civil War and World War II, women share insights that are as surprising as they are profound.  The presentation is one of the Canalside Talks for 2011 and will be held on Monday, March 5 at 7 p.m.

Computer Classes are still being held at the library during March.  Classes will be held on each day from 10 a.m. to noon and the same subject will be discussed again from 2 to 4 p.m. in the afternoon.  Reservations are recommended.  The classes are as follows

Tuesday, March 6            Introduction to Computers

Thursday, March 8          Job Search Skills

Tuesday, March 13           How to Download EBooks & Audiobooks

Thursday, March 15         Job Search Skills, Part 2

Tuesday, March 20           Windows 7 Overview

Thursday, March 22         Job Skills Part 3

Tuesday, March 27           Website Building Basics

The Canastota Public Library is one of the areas best resources for all of us.  Whether we are in need of a place to meet or are interesting about a new subject, the library has the information you need to get you started in a new direction this March.  Please check out our webpage for information on regular programming that is also being offered in March.  You can see our events calendar at canastotalibrary.org.

Students Receive GED with help from Tutors

Canastota Public Library news

By Elizabeth Totten

(Canastota, NY) On Thursday Jan. 12, the Canastota Public Library held a celebration for nine students who recently received their GED. These students all studied with tutors at the library through the Madison County Reads Ahead Adult Literacy Program.

The celebration included time with family, friends and tutors and included a graduation cake and other refreshments. The students all received certificates of completion as well.

“We decided to go back for our GED after we had our son, Draven,” said Ashley Gladle.

Ashley and her fiancé, Cory Bennett, started the GED process about two years ago.  Just before taking the GED test, Bennett got a job with Thermold in Canastota as a machine operator.  In preparing for the test, Bennett worked with tutor Clark Brown and Gladle worked with tutor Josie Forbes.

“Now, we’ll just need to stay ahead of Draven as we go through life,” noted Bennett.

Other recipients included cousins, Anthony Roscoe III and Christi Johnston.  They decided that they would work towards their GED together. They both said they encouraged each other, failed some things together, but ultimately they passed the GED testing together.

“I just wanted to better myself and go on to further my career,” said Johnston who is currently a student at Utica School of Commerce majoring in General Administration.

Her cousin, Anthony Roscoe III, is interested in pursuing a career in the culinary arts field. One day he would like to own his own pastry shop.

Retired teacher, Kathy Stagnitti, worked with the cousins to prepare for the GED testing.  She said that becoming a tutor has been very fulfilling for her. She indicated that many students do keep in touch with her to fill her in on their next steps in their educational journey.

“I believe in self-fulfilling prophecies,” Stagnitti said, “If you tell someone they can succeed, they will!”

Those who obtained their GED included Kimberly M. Boeding, Sharon M. Everspaugh, Cory J. Bennett, Ashley M. Gladle, Christi E. Johnston, Anthony J. Roscoe III, Marion E. Hoch-Schmidtka, Mason M.A. Schwarz, and John W. Snyder.

The proud tutors of these included Clair Hessmer, Karen Czerkies, Clark Brown, Josie Forbes, Kathy Stagnitti and Morris Atwood.

Over the past two program years, 29 students have earned the GED Diploma throughout Madison County.

For more information on the Madison County Reads Ahead Adult Literacy Program, contact Patricia Graham, Program Coordinator, or Morris Atwood, Program Consultant at the Oneida Public Library at 363-3050.

For information on obtaining a tutor at the Canastota Public Library through the program, stop in at the library or call Local Coordinator Karen Czerkies at the library for an appointment.  The Canastota Public Library is located at 102 W. Center Street.

For additional information, call the library at 697-7030.
