Canastota Public Library Announces New Groups, Presentations in January

By Elizabeth Totten

(Canastota, NY – Jan. 2012) January is always a refreshing time…a time for perspective on our lives…a time for getting organized, trying new things and beginning anew.

At the library, this January, we have several new organizations, some new presentations and a new artist exhibiting with us.

If you are interested in saving money, why not join our Canastota Coupon Clippers?  The group meets the first and third Wednesday of every month at 6:30 p.m.

Scrapbooking is a fun way to preserve photos and memories for yourself, your friends and relatives.  A new Scrapbooking group will begin meeting at the library on Monday, Jan. 9 beginning at 5:30 p.m.  The group hopes you will bring all your own photos and supplies and come out to meet and work with other scrapbookers. Meetings will be held the second Monday of every month.

Also on Monday, Jan. 9 the Canastota Library and Canal Town Museum will present a Canalside Talk at 7 p.m. in the Children’s Area of the library.  Robert Arnold III, a retired Albany County Historian will speak about “1812:  New York’s War, New York’s Impetus.”  Much of the war was fought on our soil and on our waterways. New Yorkers responded to the military conflict and in doing so found serious inadequacies in the state’s infrastructure and the nation’s military capacity.  This talk will be held with the support of the New York Council for Humanities.

January brings back the library’s Tech Tuesdays and new Computer Therapy Thursdays.  During the months of January, February and March, the library, with the support of the Mid York Library System will provide free computer services to assist the unemployed, underemployed and other patrons interested in updating their computer skills. With five laptops and technology training staff available, patrons can receive individualized help or attend scheduled training programs.  When the laptops are not in use during training, the computers will be available for use on the main floor of the library.

Shannon Crandall is the artist of the month for the library this month. Crandall’s mixed media paintings reflect the rhythm of life and nature.  Layers, textures and vibrant colors play center stage in her creations. A graduate of the University of Maryland with a B.A. in Art History, Crandall considers herself to be a self taught artist. An artist’s reception will be held for Shannon Crandall on Jan. 10 at 7 p.m.  The public is invited to attend.

We hope you will stop into the library during January to visit with us and listen to a lecture or join one of our regular groups. May January bring you the changes that you are seeking in your life.

Making a Difference at Youth Leadership Day

Guest Column

By Andrew Zupan

(Canastota, NY – Nov. 2011) On Nov. 22 a leadership workshop took place at the Canastota High School playroom gym. Forty-three ninth graders attended the event. Members from Canastota High School’s FBLA helped to coordinate and prepare the event and served as facilitators for the day.

LEAD USA once again presented to the students. The speakers presenting for LEAD were Gary Ford and Pete Tamburo. They have two main beliefs: One is that you need to make the right choices and the other is that your legacy starts now.  They also feel that you have the power to change your attitude. To that end, they gave the students three tasks.

Participants were asked to get into small work groups. Task one was to write down one leadership quality each group admired in a person, an individual who has a positive attitude, and one reason why Canastota High School is the best school in America.

Task two was to pick a person from history who had/has good leadership skills and for task three each group was given a situation in which they had to act out a skit and come up with a solution to the problem.  The skit was scored by three judges on a scale from 1 to 10.

The winning team consisted of Shania Leonard, Hafeezah Lewis, Rachel Bargabos, Jacob Fleming, Wayne Cooperider and Derick Trost. Most skit topics focused on “bullying.”

After lunch the speakers left and the supervising teachers, Mrs. Bonczek, Mrs. Brenon, and Ms. Garofalo (Character Education Committee) gave the students additional tasks.

Task one was to select and discuss five positive things about CHS.  Task two was to come up with three problems or concerns with our school.  Each group wrote this information on large sheets of paper and presented them to all attending students, thus sharing their attributes and concerns with one another.

The positive items were discussed by the entire group as were the problems and concerns.  After presenting their concerns, students brainstormed ideas for improvement which made the day end on a positive note.  The ninth graders in attendance left the day knowing that they can make a difference.

This would not have been possible without donations from several local businesses including, Abscope Environmental Inc., Canal Town Optical, Canastota Board of Education (Cheep Grant), Canastota NC Corp., Canastota Publishing Co., Inc., Debrucque Greenhouses, Physical Therapy Plus,  Precision Auto Craft, Ralston Supply Center, Inc., and Tops Market. Thanks to all of these businesses and the speakers for making the day very successful.

Andrew Zupan is a member of the class of 2015 at Canastota High School.
