Sullivan Food Cupboard Served more than 8,200 in 2011

To the Editor:

(Town of Sullivan, NY – Jan. 2012) The Sullivan Food Cupboard, an outreach program of the Greater Sullivan Area Association of Churches, served 8,258 people in 2011. This past Christmas, we prepared 155 family and 105 senior Christmas baskets. In addition to food, we were able to provide gifts, thanks to Chittenango Central School, the churches and many individuals.

We were able to do this thanks to the continued support of the churches, the school, letter carriers, Scouts, businesses, organizations and individuals in the community. Christmas baskets were delivered or picked up at the American Legion or the North Chittenango Firehouse Saturday, Dec. 17.

We are staffed by 38 volunteers who work one three-hour shift a month. This allows the Cupboard to be open daily Monday through Saturday from 10 a.m. to 1 p.m. In addition, 14 volunteers substitute for those who are unable to work their assigned day or on days where there are five days of the month (example, five Mondays and Tuesdays in January)

Fyler Cupboard is open the first and last Saturday of each month.

The breakdown of service was 1,446 families; 6,830 adults and 1,619 children.

The Food Cupboard received substantial financial assistance from area churches, individuals, organizations, the Food Bank of Central New York and the CrossRoads Concert for Hunger.

The largest single donation was received from the benefit dinner held by Ted Field and his staff at Delphia’s Restaurant. This resulted in more than $6,600 that was not budgeted or expected.

For the first time in several years, the cupboard finished the fiscal year with income exceeding expenses.

Area churches regularly collected food for the cupboard. In addition, the Scouts and the postal workers collected significant amounts of food. Individuals provided regular contributions.

Greyrock Farms donated eggs and fresh vegetables throughout the growing season, providing fresh produce that the cupboard would otherwise not have been able to maintain. Price Chopper has donated fresh bread and rolls for the past several months.

We are most fortunate to live in a community that provides for the least fortunate of those among us.
