(Hamilton, NY – Sept. 7, 010) Senior captain and goalie Kirsten Lalli (Pound Ridge, N.Y.) became the first Colgate field hockey player to earn back-to-back Patriot League Goalie of the Week honors after a 48-save week.

Lalli stopped 20 shots in the 4-1 loss to Northwestern on Monday, Aug. 30, and set her new career-high this past Saturday at Rider. She pushed aside 21 shots in the 5-0 defeat at the hands of the Broncs and finished the weekend with seven stops on Sunday in a 5-1 loss to Monmouth.

She leads the league in saves per game with 13 and has the only shutout among goalies after a 5-0 blanking of Robert Morris a couple of weeks ago. Lalli is first in save percentage at .788 and fourth in goals against average with a mark of 4.50. She has played the most minutes among conference netminders as well.

Lalli has blown away the competition in saves with 52 on the year, as the closest league goalkeeper is Jessica Miller at Lehigh with 22.

The Raiders will be back on the road this weekend as Colgate heads to Connecticut to face Yale on Saturday at noon, followed by a 1 p.m. start with Quinnipiac.

WEST LONG BRANCH, N.J. (9/5/10) – The Colgate field hockey team dropped its third game of the season after falling to Monmouth, 5-1, on Sunday afternoon.

Colgate (1-3) saw senior Laura Denenga (Harare, Zimbabwe) net her third goal of the season with sophomores Adrianna Libutti (South Windsor, Conn.) and Kendall Zaharris (Baltimore, Md.) adding assists. Senior captain Kirsten Lalli (Pound Ridge, N.Y,) got her fourth straight start in net and made seven saves in the defeat.

Monmouth (2-1) got two goals from Michelle Pieczynski and two helpers by Alex Carroll. Katelyn Buckley, Morganne Firmstone and Meredith Violi also posted goals for the home team. Four of the five goals scored came in the second half. Melissa Katz earned the win in net, pushing aside one shot.

Firmstone started the scoring 4:14 into the game as the ball was played into the left side of the circle by Carroll and Firmstone was there at the near post to make it 1-0. The Raiders answered back under two minutes later on Denenga’s third of the year. The goal happened on a penalty corner with Denenga firing a shot that deflected off a defender and into the back of the net.

The quick scoring continued, this time on the Monmouth side. After Denenga scored at the 29:08 mark, Buckley scored her first of the season with 27:16 remaining in the half. She was able to set up a 1-on-1 situation and after Lalli made the initial stop, Buckley followed her shot and gave the Hawks the lead back at 2-1 at the half.

Monmouth led in shots at halftime with an 8-4 advantage and had four penalty corners to three for the Raiders.

The second half belonged to the Hawks and it started 6:06 into the frame with Violi netting her first of the year. She was able to carry the ball to the end line and she shot through traffic, finding the net to push the lead up to 3-1. Pieczynski increased the lead to 4-1 with the first of her two on the day. She used her stick on a deflection from a Carroll shot at the top of the circle and the ball snuck past Lalli.

Pieczynski struck again with 11:26 remaining to close the scoring at 5-1. The ball was played into the circle from the end line and it found the stuck of Pieczynski and she didn’t miss, scoring her second goal of the season and the game.

The Hawks finished the day with 16 shots, while the Raiders collected six. Monmouth had a 9-4 advantage in penalty corners.

Colgate will be back on the road next weekend as the Raiders travel to Connecticut to take on Yale and Quinnipiac, beginning with the Bulldogs at noon on Saturday.

(STATE COLLEGE, Pa.- Sept. 4, 2010) The Colgate women’s volleyball team concluded the Hampton Inn Classic with a 3-0 (25-22, 25-21, 27-25) loss to Seton Hall on Saturday afternoon and finished with a 1-2 mark in the tournament.

“Seton Hall wanted it more than us today,” said head coach Ryan Baker. “We need to take more pride in our block and serve if we want to compete at the next level. Come Monday, we will be working hard on those two areas.”

The Raiders (3-3) got double-digit kills from senior captain Logan Keala (Kaneohe, Hawaii) and sophomore Kaylee Dougherty (Landisville, Pa.) as each had 11 in their second match of the day. Freshman Kaylee Fifer (Lantana, Texas) continued to impress at the net with 27 assists
and also added seven digs. Senior captain Devon Applegate (Davidson, N.C.) was a dig machine with 21 on the day to lead all players.

The Pirates (2-4) had a great start from Sarah Osmun with 18 kills and had a total of 45 attacks. Hannah Hugeback recorded 12 kills and eight digs. Seton Hall had four players with 11 or more digs on the day with Alyssa Warren posting a team-high 19. Megan Murison was the primary setter and finished with 33 assists to lead all setters.
In the first set, the Raiders were able to amass a 15-11 advantage midway through with back-to-back errors from Seton Hall and a kill from senior captain Casey Ritt (Colorado Springs, Colo.). Colgate held onto a three-point lead until 21-18, but the Pirates chipped away at the lead and with kills from Sarah Osmun and Olivia Trudeau and an error from senior captain Logan Keala (Kaneohe, Hawaii). Seton Hall outscored Colgate down the stretch by a 7-1 margin and earned the
25-22 win to take the opening set.

The second set belonged to Seton Hall again as Colgate fell behind early and ended up tying the score, but could never take the lead. With the score at 12-11 in favor Seton Hall, the Pirates went on a 7-2 run to open up a 19-13 lead.

The Raiders made it interesting with a late surge. Down by the 19-13 score, Colgate went on an 8-3 run to cut the lead to 21-20. Sophomore Michelle McCarthy (Manhattan Beach, Calif.) came through with a pair kills on the run, while junior Maureen Colligan (Odessa, Fla.) and Keala also contributed with kills. Despite the big comeback that was as close as the Raiders got as Seton Hall called a timeout and rebounded to take the set, 25-21.

The final set was a competitive one on both sides. Colgate started with back-to-back points on an attack error by the pirates and a kill from Keala to make it 2-0. The two-point lead was the largest from either team until Keala and McCarthy posted kills in between an attack error from Seton Hall to build a 15-12 lead. The Raiders also held an 18-15 advantage, but the lead wilted on three straight points from the Pirates.

With the score 18-18, each team got the lead until Seton Hall opened its largest lead of the set at 23-20 with a kill from Osmun. Colgate went on its own small run and tied the set at 24-24, highlighted by a Keala kill. The senior captain attacked again and gave the Raiders a 25-24 lead, but a kill from Osmun, followed by a Raider attack error gave the advantage back to the Pirates at 26-25. Hugeback finished off Colgate on the final play with a kill and Seton Hall left with the sweep of the Raiders.

“I felt we had some strong individual performances,” said Baker, “but we won’t win those type of matches unless everyone contributes and gives their best, focused effort.”

Colgate will head to western New York next weekend for the Canisius/Niagara Invitational, beginning on Friday.

HAMILTON, NY (9/4/10) – Junior running back Nate Eachus (Drums, Pa.) rushed 30 times for 145 yards and one touchdown, while the No. 22 Colgate Raiders opened the 2010 season with a 30-29 win over Monmouth, Saturday night at Andy Kerr Stadium.

Colgate built a 30-13 lead with 7:53 remaining in the third quarter before the Hawks made a furious fourth-quarter charge. Monmouth quarterback Kyle Frazier connected with Tyler George in the end zone with 1:34 remaining to make it a one-point game, the Hawks then decided to go for two but were stuffed short when senior Brad Keele (Jacksonville, Fla.) met Andrew Mandeville on a quarterback sneak at the goal line.

Senior quarterback Greg Sullivan (Monroe, N.Y.) threw for 180 yards on 11-of-14 passing, while senior wide receiver Doug Rosnick (Langhorne, Pa.) stepped up for the Raiders with seven receptions for a career-high 103 yards. Colgate massed a total of 424 yards of offense and controlled the ball for 38 minutes.

Colgate (1-0) wasted no time getting on the board on the first drive of the game. The Raiders marched down the field in just over four minutes with Eachus plunging into the end zone on a four-yard run. The drive was highlighted by Daniel Cason’s (East Stroudsburg, Pa.) first collegiate reception. The freshman pulled down a 36-yard pass from Sullivan in the middle of the field to the Monmouth 15-yard line. The drive was eight plays for 72 yards.

The Raiders increased their lead to 14-0 with 37 seconds left in the opening quarter. This time Colgate ate some time off the clock with a drive of 7:10. The march was 13 plays and 77 yards.

With a big third down play, Sullivan connected with Rosnick for a 17-yard gain, down to the Monmouth 27. Later on in the drive, Eachus was stuffed on a 3rd-and-2, which set up a fourth down play. This time Eachus wasn’t denied as he picked up the first down with a two-yard charge. Sullivan then took it into the end zone himself with a 16-yard run down the left side, just breaking the plain to make it 14-0.

Monmouth (0-1) answered back with a six-play, 60-yard drive with Frazier hooking up with Chris Hogan in the end zone on a 17-yard post pattern to slice the lead in half at 14-7. The drive consisted of three passes of 10 or more yards.

On their first possession of the second quarter, the Raiders added to their lead on a career-best 31-yard field goal from sophomore Evan Colborne (Tampa, Fla.) to increase the advantage to 17-7. Eachus once again was the focal point of the offense and rushed for a 35-yard gain on a 3rd-and-inches play to get the ball to the three-yard line. Monmouth held its ground and thanks to a holding penalty on Colgate, the Raiders were forced into the field goal.

Colgate opened the second half with the ball and went 76 yards in nine plays to increase the lead to 23-7. After four straight rushes and a 4th-and-1 conversion from Eachus, Sullivan dropped back and hit a wide-open Rosnick for a 50-yard strike.

The celebration didn’t last long as Bobby Giles returned the kickoff 90 yards to make it 23-13 Raiders. It was the first time since October 2007 that Colgate had surrendered a kickoff return. The Hawks went for the two-point conversion, but failed.

On the ensuing kickoff, the Raiders almost gave Monmouth a dose of its own medicine as junior Noah Jackson (Vista, Calif.) had a nice return of 51 yards. The drive got interesting on a 3rd-and-1 when Eachus broke up the middle for a 20-yard gain, but the ball came loose. Luckily for the Raiders Rosnick was there and the ball popped directly into his hands. On the next play, Sullivan finished the drive with his second touchdown of the night, to put the Raiders up 30-13.

GAME NOTES: Eachus is now just four yards away from becoming the 15th Colgate running back to accrue 2,000 rushing yards in his Colgate career. The Raiders were 8-for-14 on third down conversions, while holding Monmouth to 1-for-8. Colgate is now 2-1 historically against Monmouth, and has won its last two season openers.

LAWRENCEVILLE, N.J. (9/4/10) – Rider netted four first-half goals and the Colgate field hockey team couldn’t recover as the Raiders dropped their second game of the season, 5-0, on Saturday afternoon.

Colgate (1-2) was shutout for its second straight game. Senior captain and goalkeeper Kirsten Lalli (Pound Ridge, N.Y.) stepped up her game with 21 saves and it was her second straight game that she had made 20-plus saves. Sophomore Anna Reddicliffe (Larchmont, N.Y.) had a team-high two shots on net.

Rider (2-0) got two goals and an assist from Sandra Penas for three points on the day. Penas was joined by Megan Pasani, Lindsay Rajeski and Shari Grinceri on the score sheet. In net, Rachel Yacovett was only tested twice and made each of the saves to earn the win.

The Broncs didn’t waste time getting on the board as Penas added the first of her two on the day five minutes into the contest. She fired a shot from the top of the circle and past Lalli to earn the first lead. Pasani increased the advantage to 2-0 after Lalli made a save on her initial shot, but Pasani followed the rebound and hit the net for the score.

Pasani’s goal opened the gates as Rider added two goals in the next four minutes. Rajeski made it 3-0 with the assist going to Virginia Egusquiza. Just under two minutes later, Penas found the net for the second time with 5:10 left in the half to push the advantage to 4-0 going into halftime.

The teams played scoreless for the final 35 minutes, but Rider was awarded a penalty with no time remaining and capitalized on the free possession. Grinceri scored at the 70-minute mark to close the game and give the Broncs a 5-0 win.

Rider finished with 34 shots to four from the Raiders. Twenty-six of the 34 attacks were put on net. The Broncs dominated in the penalty corner count with a 19-2 advantage.

Colgate will be back in action tomorrow at noon as the Raiders travel to Monmouth to face the Hawks in another non-conference road game.

(Hamilton, NY – Sept. 2, 2010) Head coach Heather Young has announced the hiring of Melissa Pearsall as an assistant coach for the Raiders. She will be the defensive coordinator for the Raiders and assist the program in all areas.

“We are extremely excited to have Melissa join our staff,” stated Young. “She brings immense playing knowledge from her time at Syracuse as well as her coaching at RIT. Her experience and understanding of the game is going to be a great asset to our defense this upcoming season.”

Pearsall comes to Colgate after a two-year stint at Rochester Institute of Technology as an assistant coach. She and the staff turned a Tigers team around from a struggling program into a highly-competitive and successful team in three years. In 2009 alone, the Tigers set school records in five different categories, including most wins with 13 and goals with 212.

“I am really enthusiastic about joining the Colgate family,” said Pearsall. “I am so grateful for the opportunity to work with outstanding student athletes, as well as Heather and Heidi here at Colgate. I believe this is a great fit for me and I am looking forward to an amazing season.”

She coached a second team All-American and Empire 8 Goalkeeper of the Year during her time, bringing her goals against down by an average of five goals. Pearsall won the Intercollegiate Women’s Lacrosse Coaches Associate Division III National Outstanding Assistant Coach Award for her efforts in 2009.

Pearsall had many responsibilities with RIT. She was the defensive coordinator, draw control coach, prepared game plans and was in charge of scouting.

In addition to her duties as an assistant coach at RIT, she was the administrative director and head coach of the modified girl’s club team with Relentless Hustle Lacrosse Club in Rochester. She helped start the team and made it into a nationally-recognized program. The team has had 5-10 athletes commit to Division I programs.

She has been a coach at the Syracuse Lacrosse Camp since 2004, where she has improved the skills and techniques for girls in the 12-18 age range.

Pearsall is a 2007 graduate of Syracuse University, where she was a defensive player for the Orange women’s lacrosse team. She won the BIG EAST title in her final season and was a two-time athletic honor roll recipient.
