HCA Students Holding ‘Rent-a-Kid’ Fundraiser for Baltimore Trip

(Oneida Castle, NY – April 2012) Holy Cross Academy’s Select and Senior choirs, under the direction of Scott Rutledge, will travel to Baltimore this May to perform at a Major League baseball game.  The Baltimore Orioles organization has chosen them to sing the National Anthem prior to their game against the Kansas City Royals on Friday May 25, at 7 p.m.

Besides an evening at the ballpark, the choir will also sing on Sunday May 27 for the noon Mass at St. Anthony’s Shrine in nearby Ellicott City.

HCA students are hard at work raising money for the trip through a fundraiser called “Rent-a-Kid.”  If you are in need of help for yard work, raking, organizing sheds or garages, or getting items ready for a yard sale, at least two or more students will work at your house or place of business, and then you can make a donation for their trip in return for their service.

Call Ed Noble at 495-2180 to schedule the work you would like done. Dates and times will be scheduled on a first-call basis.  Students will not do any work that includes ladders, scaffolding, or any work deemed dangerous in any way or beyond the scope of light duty.  Students will be under adult supervision during their work.

In the laying on of hands and anointing we proclaim the Good News that God desires us to be healthy and one in the body of Christ.

HCA Seniors Travel to Albany

Catholics at the Capitol

Deacon Jim Chappell (seated, left foreground) prepares with HCA senior students for their meeting with Assemblyman Bill Magee during the “Catholics at the Capitol” public policy advocacy day in Albany.

(Oneida Castle, NY – March 2012) Holy Cross Academy’s senior class travelled to Albany on Tuesday March 13 to participate in the annual “Catholics at the Capitol” public policy advocacy day.

Catholic bishops from the eight dioceses in New York, including Syracuse’s Bishop Robert Cunningham, joined more than 1,000 citizens at the Empire State Plaza Convention Center. The event is organized by the New York State Catholic Conference, which represents the Bishops of New York State in matters of public policy.

Deacon Jim Chappell, HCA’s 12th grade government and economics teacher, has made this trip an annual part of his course.

“The seniors’ participation [at ‘Catholics at the Capitol’] is a natural, ‘hands-on’ follow-up to our study of American Government in the fall semester,” said Chappell. “In studying the US Constitution, the three branches of government, our state and local governments, and the political process, their participation in public policy advocacy makes real the theory we explored during the course.”

After an early 6:15 a.m. departure from HCA, the group arrived in Albany to register and to meet with Assemblyman Bill Magee at his office.  In the meeting, students advocated for the legislative priorities of the NYS Catholic Conference, including support for pregnant women and opposition to abortion, reimbursement to Catholic schools for state-mandated services, and protecting the poor, immigrants and the incarcerated.

Afterwards they stopped by Assemblywoman Claudia Tenney’s office, and later met briefly with Bishop Cunningham.

Public Policy Day concluded in the afternoon with a short procession from the convention center to Immaculate Conception Cathedral, led by the Knights of Columbus.  Bishop Howard Hubbard of Albany then offered Mass at the Cathedral.

Though he was unable to attend Tuesday’s event, Cardinal Timothy Dolan joined fellow bishops a day earlier for a meeting at the state Capitol with Gov. Andrew Cuomo, Assembly Speaker Sheldon Silver and Senate majority leader Dean G. Skelos.

Chappell explained what he hoped the seniors would take from their experience in Albany.

“I would hope that they will recognize and appreciate the importance and necessity to be involved in the political process of our country,” Chappell said. “I would hope that they will also recognize their responsibility goes beyond simply getting someone elected. All must work to influence our elected officials in a positive manner as to the values we expect of them in conducting their office and in their voting.”

St. Patrick’s Accepting Applications for the Fall

March Deadlines for Busing, Financial Aid Approaching

(Oneida, NY- March 2012) St. Patrick’s School is currently accepting applications for the fall for its pre-school, pre-kindergarten, and kindergarten through sixth-grade programs. The Pre-school program is designed for 3-year-olds and is held Tuesday and Thursday mornings. Spaces are limited.

The pre-k program is for 4- and 5-year-olds, and there is the option of half days or full days. The program is an academic program with a strong emphasis on early math and reading skills. This program is very popular and fills up quickly.

Kindergarten at St. Patrick’s is a full-day program where students learn math, phonics and the skills they will need in English language arts as well as the many other subjects taught in our higher grades. Screening for kindergarten students will be held March 23 by appointment. Parents interested in the kindergarten program should contact the school for an application and registration information as soon as possible.

Students are also being accepted in to the school’s first- through sixth-grade programs, as transfer students are always welcome.

Principal Peg Brown said transfer students often flourish at St. Patrick’s due to the structured but nurturing environment and small class sizes. The small class sizes give each child the individual attention he or she needs to succeed.

The school also has an outstanding faculty that is state certified and specializes in elementary education. St. Patrick’s offers the latest in technology with a state-of-the-art computer lab and smart board technology in the classrooms. Music, art, physical education and Spanish are also taught.

The academic achievements and dedicated services provided to children have earned St. Patrick’s the prestigious accreditation from the Middle States Association. It is the only elementary school in Madison County to have earned Middle States accreditation.

Parents interested in learning more are encouraged to call Brown at (315) 363-3620 as soon as possible to arrange for a tour or for more information about applying. The deadline for requesting busing is April 1 and deadlines for tuition assistance programs are in March.
