Veterans News

(Munnsville, Chittenango, Lenox, NY) Department Commander W. Michael Bowen, Department President Ann Geer and Detachment Commander Greg “Doc” Gibbs visited Madison County.

Munnsville American Legion was their first stop with a luncheon and a tour of the Post.

The Commander and group traveled to Chittenango for a tour of the Chittenango Landing Canal Boat Museum, and all enjoyed the tour and history.

Dinner was at the Rusty Rail Party House in Canastota later that evening, where everyone attending enjoyed the fine food and the warm setting.

After dinner, the three leaders spoke about the importance of the American Legion and its programs to and for veterans and their families, community, state and nation. The Commander talked about our many programs relating to our youth of today and the National Emergence Fund for the people across the state who have been victimized during recent floods and other disasters.

Commander Bowen also spoke about membership, how important it is to reach veterans and how membership is the key to the Legion’s success and future.

Cheryl is always helping out, either picking up the trash on Route 20, hosting at the Welsh Church, working church dinners, volunteering at Cazenovia Public Library, the “From the Ground Up Riding Therapy, Apheresis Platelet Donation and she has ran in the Boston Marathon four times for the Jimmy Fund Cancer research.

They both have traveled to New Orleans numerous times as part of Operation Southern Comfort and volunteer at the Nelson Odeon as it gets started in the community.

Locally-Crafted Beer Coming Soon

Matt and Carrie

Matt Whalen and Carrie Blackmore will soon be crafting brew in Hamilton made from locally grown hops. The couple is standing in front of what will be the office of Good Nature Brewing Company. (Photo by Margo Frink)

Will offer tasting, sell kegs and growlers to go

By Margo Frink

(Hamilton, NY – Sept. 2011) Combining his passion for crafting beer and her love of community Matt Whalen and Carrie Blackmore have teamed up and will open a “micro-brewery” in the village of Hamilton.

Although the term “micro-brewery” is commonly recognized as a brewery making around 15,000 barrels or fewer of beer annually, Whalen and Blackmore’s company, “Good Nature Brewing Company Inc.” (GNB) will join the “nano-brewery” movement, making less than three barrels. The term “nano-brewery” is not well defined. Scientifically, it could be considered a brewery that makes no more than 15 barrels annually because a nano is 1,000 times smaller than a micro but who’s counting.

All Whalen and Blackmore want to do is make good, quality beer and sell it to bars and restaurants in Central New York.

“I’m a beer snob,” Blackmore admits. “I want to try what’s new and of good quality. Small batch brewing is higher quality.”

GNB is located at 37 Milford St. in the village. The site is where the beer will be crafted, tasted and sold by the keg or growler. Growlers are to-go beers. They come in all sizes, usually glass bottles that are filled straight from the tap, sealed with a twist and often wrapped in plastic. The brew house will be separate from the tasting room.

But before you purchase, GNB will offer a taste. The couple plans to install a 10-foot long tasking table with four to six different kinds of beer on tab, rotating beers on tap depending on what’s in season. Only three two-ounce tastes are allowed.

“We are not a bar,” Blackmore said. “The growlers will be sealed to take off the premises.”

The store will also sell t-shirts and glassware and provide tours of the brewing house.

Whalen is a chef by trade. Blackmore, who works at Hamilton Whole Foods and a graduate of Colgate University, previously managed a garden at a non-profit boarding school. The couple, who now reside in Madison, met in the Adirondacks. They originally were going to open a restaurant preparing fresh food from community gardens. But Whalen’s passion for making home brew led them in another direction. Whalen began making home brew about six years. The recipes at GNB are his.

Whalen explained that there are not a lot of places to buy grains locally so GNB will purchase its grains from the Champlain Valley and its malt from a company that buys its grains from New York State. The hops they plan to use are 100 percent locally-grown from Foothill Hops Farms in Munnsville.

“We want to incorporate local ingredients with Matt’s recipes,” Blackmore said. Even the chamomile and honey will come from local vendors.

“Our product is better because we use fresh ingredients and support the local economy,” Blackmore said. “It’s a positive for Central New York.”

GNB beers include a full-bodied American Pale Ale, a more heavily-hopped India Pale Ale and a Chicory Mocha Porter made with chocolate malt and locally-grown Pearle hops. Other brews in the works are a Nut Brown Ale and The Nor’ Easter.

Whalen is also hoping to enlist the help of Colgate University students to come in and set up a lab and provide him information on maintaining good yeast.

Blackmore said the original project was going to be half the size. They set up their website and sold memberships and products to raise money, which helped to purchase a computer.  Then with the guidance of the Madison County Industrial Development Agency, they received a $35,000 grant through the micro-enterprise program.

“The equipment alone cost that,” Blackmore said. Then the IDA helped them obtain a loan, which doubled their start up.

Although Blackmore wrote the grant, she said, “It was all the county. I don’t know how to appropriately thank them but to succeed. I have to succeed.”

It’s going to take some time before GNB is crafting brew, though. Blackmore and Whalen recently received their federal brewer’s license and are awaiting approval from state Agriculture & Markets before submitting their application to the state for their brewer’s retail license, which should only take a couple of weeks, Blackmore said.

They are hoping to be up and running no later than Jan. 1 but it could be sooner.

For more information, visit the GNB site at goodnaturebrewing.com.
