ASPCA Grants $29,000 to Wanderers’ Rest

Kolb and Woodcock

Funds to Assist Low-Income Madison County Families with Spay, Neuter Costs

(Madison County, NY – April 2012) American Society for the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals has awarded $29,000 to Wanderers’ Rest Humane Association to expand its spay/neuter assistance program through the state Animal Population Control Program.

With this grant, more than 500 animals will be fixed, preventing countless litters of unplanned cats and dogs from entering the shelter system.

“This grant enables us to help families that cannot afford the cost of spaying and neutering their pets, especially in this economy,” said Denise Adams, Wanderers’ Rest shelter manager. “For example, a family of five making $45,500 or less is eligible. This should be a big help for families that have to choose between this kind of expense and paying for food, medicine or the rent. It will also prevent many from surrendering their animals to the shelter to avoid unwanted litters.”

Low-income Madison County pet owners will be asked to pay half of the cost of sterilization, while Wanderers’ Rest will cover the remainder of the surgery cost by using funds provided through this grant.

Through an agreement with five participating veterinarians in Madison County, the costs are: $110 for a female dog, $85 for a male dog, $85 for a female cat, and $55 for a male cat.

For example, the owner will pay the veterinarian $55 for spaying a female dog, and Wanderers’ Rest will pay the veterinarian the remaining $55. The grant does not cover additional veterinary costs that may be associated with the surgery, such as an exam or vaccinations or special reproductive health circumstances.

Pet owners must apply at Wanderers’ Rest for assistance and provide an SSI statement, their Federal income tax return or proof of public assistance. Once approved, Wanderers’ Rest will provide a voucher good for 30 days that can be taken to one of the participating veterinary practices.

“If we are serious about reducing abandonment and euthanasia of cats and dogs, then we must address their overpopulation by spaying and neutering,” said Dr. Gerard Kolb, DVM. “Unplanned pregnancies are much too common. Sickness, starvation, predation, vehicular trauma and other unkind destinies await many offspring born of animals that should have been altered before reproducing.”

“Wanderers’ Rest celebrates every homeless cat and dog that is given a second chance with a new loving family and home,” said Wanderers’ Rest Executive Director Glenn Ivers. “The fact remains, however, that there are far more homeless animals than there are homes available to them. One of the most humane things that pet owners can do is to spay and neuter their cats and dogs. Kittens and puppies touch our hearts, but roughly half face a very uncertain future that can break our hearts.”

For more information, contact Wanderers’ Rest at (315) 697-2796 or humanemanager@wanderersrest.org. Wanderers’ Rest is located on Sutherland Drive, Canastota about one mile west of Canastota on State Route 5.

Library Welcomes Two Authors in One Day

(Canastota, NY – April 2012) It isn’t often that the library welcomes two very different authors to the library on the same day for two different events.  But, that is exactly what is happening at the Canastota Public Library on Saturday, April 21.  Authors Nicki Greenwood and H. Erin Nelson will both be visiting the library.

Beginning at 10:30am on April 21 area writers can learn how to polish their manuscripts before submitting them to a publisher when they join Nicki Greenwood for a “Kissing the Frog” Workshop.  Greenwood offers a fast-paced, informative beginner’s writer’s workshop covering the rules of basic grammar and manuscript mechanics.  In this workshop, Greenwood will cover the nine parts of speech, sentence and paragraph structure, showing versus telling, passive voice and flashbacks.  She is the author of four paranormal romance books and is a member of the CNY Romance Writers and the Romance Writers of America.  If interested in attending, patrons should contact the library as there is limited space for this workshop.

Then at 1pm, H. Erin Nelson returns to her hometown library in Canastota for a book talk and signing of her new children’s book, “Bibletoons: Adventure with Noah.”  In “Bibletoons,” readers will meet Percy Porcupine, a bored and lonely creature who is in desperate need of some excitement; Missy Mouse, an energetic little rodent who thrives on adventure; and Noah, a wise, old man obedient to God.  The book will be available for purchase.  This is Nelson’s first book in a series published by Tate Publishing.

The library is located at 102 W. Center Street in Canastota.  For additional information, feel free to contact the library at 697-7030.

Woodcock Watch Planned at the GSC

(Town of Lenox, NY – April 2012) April 21, the public is invited to the Great Swamp Conservancy at 6:30 p.m. for an American woodcock program and walk. The PowerPoint presentation begins at 6:30 with the walk following. The long bill of this upland shorebird is sensitive and flexible, allowing it to feel for worms in deep soil.

Woodcocks are rarely seen during the day unless flushed. Woodcock have a chunky, short neck and are short-legged. Its plumage matches the dead leaves of the forest floor and old fields where it roosts by day.

Space is limited, so reservations are strongly recommended; for more information, call the Great Swamp at (315) 697-2950 or email gscincny@centralny.twcbc.com.

Duran to Attend Banquet of Champions

Roberto Duran

(Canastota, NY) The International Boxing Hall of Fame announced four-division world champion Roberto “Hands of Stone” Duran will attend the Banquet of Champions on Saturday, June 9. The banquet is part of festivities planned for the 23rd Annual Hall of Fame Induction Weekend set for June 7 to 10, 2012.

“Roberto Duran was one of the greatest to ever step into the boxing ring,” said Hall of Fame director Edward Brophy. “Known as ‘Hands of Stone’ for his devastating punching power, Duran is revered by boxing fans the world over.”

The Panamanian superstar turned pro in 1968 and boxed in five decades. He captured world championships in four weight divisions (lightweight, welterweight, junior middleweight and middleweight) and during his career registered wins over Esteban DeJesus, Iran Barkley, Davey Moore and Hall of Famers Ken Buchanan, Carlos Palomino, Pipino Cuevas and Sugar Ray Leonard. His pro record is 103-16 (70 KOs).

Duran, who was inducted in his first year of eligibility in 2007, will join fellow Hall of Famers Marvelous Marvin Hagler and Sugar Ray Leonard at the banquet to help pay tribute and welcome to the Hall of Fame their former ring rival and 2012 Inductee Thomas “Hitman” Hearns.

“I’m very pleased and happy to return to the Boxing Hall of Fame in Canastota and see my good friend Thomas Hearns getting inducted into such a wonderful place,” said Duran.

“I watched Thomas Hearns grow from amateur status to a professional, until he became a World Champion, who faced his boxing challengers with courage and determination,” said Hagler.  “I am glad that he finally has retired for good! I believe that Boxing Hall of Fame makes a good choice. Thomas Hearns deserves to be inducted into the International Boxing Hall of Fame and be recognized as one of the best. I have tremendous respect for Hearns. My congratulations!”

“Tommy was such an imposing and incredibly exciting fighter. People were in awe of his power and speed,” said Leonard. “He would out-speed the boxers. He would annihilate the punchers. He was one of my toughest fights without question. He brought the best out of me and he told me I brought the best out of him. I’m so excited for my friend to be inducted into the Boxing Hall of Fame.”

Also at the banquet, the Hall of Fame will help Duran celebrate the 40th anniversary of his lightweight title win over Ken Buchanan at Madison Square Garden on June 26, 1972.

“Forty years ago I beat Ken Buchanan for my first world title in Madison Square Garden,” said Duran. “I look forward to stepping back into the famous Madison Square Garden ring that is on display at the Hall of Fame. I’m very, very happy and proud to take not only my name but to take my country Panama to Canastota with me,” said Duran.

“We’re thrilled to help Roberto Duran commemorate the landmark anniversary of his first world championship,” said Brophy.

Become A Couponer

Canastota Public Library News

(Canastota, NY- April 2012) The Canastota Coupon Clippers has created a Coupon “Cranny” in the Library.  The Cranny facilitates a self-serve coupon exchange.  Our Coupon notebook is located on a shelf in the “Q” or oversized book section of the library on the main floor.  Couponers may take coupons or drop them off whenever they visit the library.

In the cranny, couponers will find a notebook which has folders related to various types of coupons including groceries, pets, babies, cleaning products, etc.  There is also a basket for miscellaneous coupons.  Scissors are attached to the basket so that a patron may sit and clip their coupons at the cranny.  A special notebook, also located on the shelf, lists a Coupon Wish List so that patrons can write in coupons they are seeking so that other coupon hunters can be on the lookout to help find those specific coupons.

As our economy gets more difficult, this Coupon Cranny will be there to help local patrons who need an extra hand.  Couponing has become a great way to save money.

Fans line the streets for the Parade of Champions that takes place prior to the Official Induction Ceremony during the annual Boxing Hall of Fame Weekend.

Volunteers putting right combinations together for celebration

(Canastota, NY) The International Boxing Hall of Fame will host the 23rd Annual Hall of Fame Induction Weekend in Canastota, New York on June 7 to 10. With many events planned, there will be something for everyone in “Boxing’s Hometown.”

According to Hall officials, nearly 300 volunteers and many community organizations will contribute their time and effort to make the annual Induction Weekend a success.

For the past several months, the library has hosted basic computer classes to help the community become more computer literate.  As we receive requests, we hope to continue to provide our patrons with those literacy skills that are necessary to succeed in today’s technological world.

Elizabeth Totten provides Public Relations at the library. Located at 102 W. Center Street in Canastota, the library is a timeless community resource for you and your family.
