(Town of Pompey, NY – Sept. 8, 2010) Onondaga County Sheriff Kevin E. Walsh reports that Sheriff’s Deputies are investigating a fatal crash that claimed the life of a Chittenango man.

At approximately 3:45 p.m., Sheriff’s Deputies and rescue crews were called to the 4200 block of Pompey Center Road, between Indian Hill Road and Preserve Parkway to investigate a one car crash that claimed the life of Erich Sorrentino, 22, of 106 Ellen Dr., Chittenango.

A passing motorist, who did not witness the crash, discovered Sorrentino’s overturned vehicle and immediately called 911.

Deputies report that Sorrentino was operating a 2007 Toyota Corolla and traveling north on Pompey Center Road when he apparently lost control of his car. Sorrentino’s car crossed over the southbound lane, drove off the roadway, and went into a roll before striking a utility pole. Impact from the crash sheared the utility pole in half and caused heavy damage to Sorrentino’s car.

Rescue crews pronounced Sorrentino dead at the scene.

Sheriff’s Accident Investigators were called to the scene and will conduct a complete investigation. No other vehicles were involved in the crash.

Pompey Center Road between Indian Hill and Preserve Parkway will remain closed for approximately 3 to 4 hours while crews replace the utility pole and repair utility lines.

Family Says They Want to Leave Village within Year

By Martha E. Conway

(Chittenango, NY – Aug. 24, 2010) Mayor Ronny Goeler didn’t mince words when consideration of the village of Chittenango’s two-dog rule came up on the agenda at the regular meeting of the Board of Trustees last week.

“I’ve made it clear how I feel,” Goeler told the board and audience at the Aug. 24 meeting.

At the July 27 regular meeting, the June family said they complied with the board’s request to collect information on special use permits, kennel definitions and multiple dog licensing ordinances.

“I’m sticking with my original feelings,” Goeler said, having made a stand at the June meeting that he would not advocate for more than two dogs in a residential area.

“I told you last month, and it is the same this month, I am not in favor of [any change],” Goeler said at the July meeting. “There are four other people here, but I will not support it. I am the product of a neighbor who applied for a third dog after the first two kept me up all night for weeks.”

Dep. Mayor Michael Sudol at that meeting said any local law the board did approve would apply globally. He said the village has seen dog issues for one dog and there are other neighbor issues, as well, such as smoke from someone’s barbecue going into someone else’s yard.

“It opens the door for everyone to do that,” Sudol said.

Village Attorney Paul Iaconis explained at the July meeting that licenses are easier to obtain than special use permits. Goeler at that meeting instructed trustees to review the information the Junes provided and be prepared to render a decision last week.

“I am not in favor of any change,” said Trustee Melinda “Mickey” Kopp last week.

“There is no motion on the table to change anything,” Goeler said. “We would need a motion to direct Paul to do something.”

“I know the feelings of other board members,” said Trustee Alan Laube. “There is no point.”

Trustee Wayne Horning did not make a statement before Sherry June asked for the floor.

“I have made arrangements for five dogs,” an emotional June said. “I want all my stuff back – letters of support and things, if I can get them. This has dragged on for five meetings now, leaving my 23-year-old daughter excited to work with the village board to maybe make some changes.

“She did everything to go over and above to do the homework you asked for,” June said. “There are many…this was not professionally handled…and hopefully in another year, we will be out of the village. I know many of you, and I was very surprised…”

Bill June said there are still people in the village confused whether village code is two dogs or three, and with a number of families housing more than the allotted two dogs.

Goeler said the time to question which was accurate was when they were considering the third dog, not the seventh.

In other business

Larry Richardson from the Chittenango Rotary Club asked the village for help getting Rotary signs posted at the village gateways.

“I want to know what the process is to properly do that,” Richardson said.

By Marg Montross, RSVP Volunteer, The Safe Pill Drop Off Program

(Sullivan, NY) My husband Dick and I have lived on Quarry Road in the town of Sullivan for the past 40 years. We are both retired, and love to travel especially to see our daughter in Virginia and our daughter and two grandchildren in New Zealand.

Our son lives close by in Tully.

We belong to St Patrick’s parish and serve in many areas. We have been involved in Chittenango Lions Club for 38 years, serving on its many projects for sight and hearing and community involvement.

I participated in the Safe Pill Drop-Off Program in Madison County in April and will also help out during the Sept. 25 campaign. I was trained for the Safe Pill Drop-Off Program at the Cornell Cooperative Extension (RSVP) building in Morrisville.

I enjoy volunteering and believe it is very important for people to give of themselves. The personal satisfaction makes me feel good, like I have accomplished something.

I decided to volunteer for the Safe Pill Drop-Off when I read an article about disposing of all the “leftover” medications. I know these medications have a negative impact on the environment, so I wanted to be part of the solution.

I believe that volunteering is rewarding (even though it can be time-consuming) because it’s worth it when you can see the results.

I was amazed at the number of programs RSVP is involved in. I think there is something for everybody to volunteer for and would recommend calling the RSVP office to find out where you might be a good fit.

RSVP Volunteer Profiles are sponsored by a grant from the Central New York Community Foundation. RSVP is funded in part by the Corporation for National & Community Service, the United Way of Greater Oneida, the Community Chests of Canastota, Hamilton, Town of Sullivan and the United Community Chest of the towns of Cazenovia, Fenner and Nelson and generous individual contributions.

Anyone interested in volunteering may call RSVP at 684-3001 or visit rsvpmadison.org.

I would also like to thank the talented cast and the crew that helps each year to put on this “off-Broadway” show.

The Lions Club has also dedicated their support financially, as well as their expertise in constructing the sets.

The village appreciates all their help and continued support.

Thank you!

Mayor Ronny Goeler

Bike Tour Chronicles Jaunt through Madison County

(Cazenovia, Chittenango, NY) A book written by a New Mexico woman and illustrated by her sister includes a chapter on stops in Madison County.

A.T. Publishing of Highland announced the recent release of “Had to Take a Break: Bicycling Mis-Adventures.” The book is written by Clayton Dorn Coburn and illustrated by Sharon Dorn Gill.

In chapter seven, the women’s journey takes them from Auburn to Baldwinsville, along Oneida Lake, through Chittenango State Park, into Cazenovia and back to Auburn. The towns and local beds-and-breakfast accommodations are featured in the chapter, the publisher said.

Maps of the bicycling routes are included, along with some history and trivia of the area.

According to A.T. Publishing, the sisters, in their forties, got on bicycles and just rode off. Although the trips began as an attempt to find the exuberance and vitality of youth, in the end they found so much more.

“They saw and experienced the beautiful world God created, while meeting wonderful people along the way. It was the struggle of overcoming adversities and challenges that gave them the real joy and reward.

“‘Had to Take a Break’ chronicles the first 10 years of their wild and funny adventures while bicycling in upstate New York, with jaunts into Pennsylvania and Canada. For every uphill they faced, they found the downhill, and sometimes on the top of the toughest mountains there were brownies and peanut butter cookies.”
