‘Sweet Cider Days’

(Hamilton, NY) Local author Jim Ford will share a slide presentation based on his new book Sweet Cider Days: A History of Mott’s in Bouckville, New York on Thursday, Sept. 16 at 7 p.m. at the Colgate Bookstore, 3 Utica St. A book-signing and reception will follow. This event is free and open to the public.

Most people have seen apple sauce or juice by Mott’s in the grocery store. But how many people know that the company has roots in upstate New York, in the tiny hamlet of Bouckville? Sweet Cider Days follows the story of the remarkable Mott family, beginning with the time of their arrival in central New York in 1868.

Ford is a native of Madison and attended Madison School and Oneonta State College. His master’s work was done at Colgate.

Ford taught junior high history for 34 years and for the past six years has been publishing a history of the Township of Madison. His previous book was The Pride of Cidertown, a history of Bouckville Summits baseball team.

One of eight-part series of speakers open to the public

(Madison, NY) The Town of Madison Historical Society will present “Abraham Lincoln, the White House Years” on Aug. 16 at 7 p.m. at the Madison Historical building.

Lincoln continues to be of popular discussion today as he was recognized as a man of integrity and a president of war. For example, he made logical decisions that benefited some of the men who ran against him, appointing them to his cabinet. His choice of generals, however, lengthened the war when they did not carry out his strategies. General McClellan ran against him in the next term, but Lincoln did not live long enough to see his term through.

Kelly Falk, who developed this intriguing half-hour presentation on Lincoln’s years during the Civil War, has interesting connections herself because her son Brian is the producer of a historic movie, The Conspirator, about Lincoln’s assassination and its aftermath. Look for this motion picture to be released nationally this winter.

Abraham Lincoln, the White House Years is part of an eight-part series of speakers that is open to the public. There is no charge, but donations are accepted.

Call 893-7401 for more information or directions.
