To the editor:
I could not have been more pleased to hear that Canastota Police Chief James Zophy is running for Sheriff. This is the best law enforcement news Madison could ever get.
I had the extreme good fortune to meet Jim five years ago when I became the Northern Madison County municipal editor for Eagle News, and soon found myself faced with matters like police blotters, homeland security grants and many other things one does not necessarily learn in school. Several things became abundantly clear to me very quickly: Jim is a fine officer, a great person, a consummate professional, a terrifically smart man and guy who is deeply dedicated to his family and community.
You are not going to find anyone else with Jim’s level of knowledge of law enforcement, anyone else who works as hard, anyone who commands as much respect from every person he meets and manages, anyone else with the drive and focus he possesses. In brief, you will not find a better man for the job. I am proud to call Jim a friend, and prouder still to endorse him for Sheriff of Madison County.
