The Madison County Republican Committee met last night to consider candidates for Madison County Sheriff. According to Madison County Board of Elections officials, the Committee has nominated Canastota Police Chief James Zophy as their candidate for the GOP line in November’s General Election.
The Madison County Democratic Committee nominated retired Trooper Allen Riley as their candidate earlier this week.
The Madison County Independence Party interviewed candidates earlier this week, but according to Chairman Terry Karst, the committee won’t make a decision until Monday, Sept. 28. The Conservative Party will interview candidates Sept. 30.
Retired law enforcement officer Dan Jones of Oneida, a member of the Oneida Common Council representing the City’s Ward 1, also is vying for nominations.
The office became vacant about a year early due to the retirement of Sheriff Ronald I. Cary Sept. 18.
