Canastota, NY – As part of the Pre-K curriculum at Peterboro Street Elementary School in Canastota, students learned all about becoming good citizens on November 9. “We wanted to tie it into our Veteran’s Day celebration,” said pre-k teachers Robin Pierce and Diane Schmidt. One of the elements of good citizenship is the ability to recite the Pledge of Allegiance. All 58 students have learned to do that as well as to sign the Pledge using American Sign Language.
One of the Pre-K students, Bryce Flynn from Mrs. Pierce’s class, shared what he had learned at school with his grandmother, Rose Fischer. As a member of the Veterans of Foreign Wars of the United States and its Ladies Auxiliary, she was very pleased at what she saw and decided to offer a Young American Award to each student who could recite and sign The Pledge of Allegiance. The awards were presented to the children in recognition of their efforts.
Pre-Kindergarten is a quality program that provides developmentally appropriate experiences that build on the children’s natural love of learning. It recognizes that young children experience the world around them using all of their senses. It uses guided play as a tool for developing those skills that lead to successful school experiences. Lessons are based on the New York State Learning Standards and the Madison-Oneida BOCES Pre-Kindergarten Prioritized Curriculum. Pre-Kindergarten is available in the Canastota, Stockbridge, and Oneida districts.
