(Canastota, NY) The Art Display for the month of October will feature quilts by the Canal Town Quilters. This local group is active in the community and meets twice each month. The display will include quilts as well as wall hangings. A reception will be determined at a future date. Quilts will be on display in the Lawson Community Room.
Baby & Me Lapsit: Baby & Me Lapsit with Miss Angela, includes songs, stories, and finger plays. This is a program is an early literacy program for parents/caregivers and babies from birth to age twenty-four months. This program will be held on Wednesdays at 10am beginning October 7 and ending on Wednesday, December 16. The group will meet in the Children’s Area on the second floor of the library.
Pre-School Storytime with Mrs. Liz is for children, aged 3 and above, and includes songs, crafts and a snack! The program returns to the Canastota Public Library on Thursday mornings at 10am in the Children’s Area on the second floor of the library. It will run from October 1 through December 17.
Librateens is the Canastota Public Library’s teen group. The teens, grades 6 and higher, meet each Wednesday that school is in session. Join us for crafts, speakers, games, movies, snacks and more! The group meets from 3pm until 4:15pm each Wednesday that school is in session.
There are two writing groups that call the Canastota Public Library home. The Afternoon Writer’s Group meets the second and fourth Tuesdays of each month at the Canastota Public Library. The Evening Writer’s Group meets on the second and fourth Monday evenings beginning at 6:30pm. Both groups meet in the Lawson Community Room at the library. Writing exercises, prompts, friendly critique, creative dialog and loving support are provided to writers of all levels and styles. All writers are welcomed!
Madison County Reads Ahead Tutors are available to assist patrons at the Canastota Public Library. Free tutors help adult learners with reading skills, English as a second language and with GED Preparation. Madison County Reads Ahead Tutors are volunteers who provide one-on-one lessons with flexible scheduling. All materials are provided at no charge and the service is confidential. On Sunday, October 4 at 2pm, The Excelsior Cornet Band will perform their “Abraham Lincoln Program.” The Excelsior Cornet Band is New York State’s only authentic Civil War brass band. Founded in 2001, the band consists of a group of upstate New York musicians who are dedicated to the performance of original Civil War music on actual antique brass band instruments of the 1860’s period. The concert will be held on the second floor at the library beginning at 2pm.
The Canastota Public Library continues their Movie Series from last year by showing the Oscar winner for Best Picture on the 1st and 3rd Thursdays of the month beginning at 6pm. On October 1, the movie will be “Chicago,” a Best Picture from 2002 starring Renee Zellweger and Catherine Zeta-Jones. On October 15, the film shown will be “It Happened One Night.” This 1934 movie stars Clark Gable and Claudette Colbert.
In October, the Canastota Public Library will begin a four week workshop entitled, “Job Hunting 101.” This program will explore library and on-line resources available to find jobs. Participants will create a resume, learn to search for jobs on-line and apply for on-line opportunities. The program will be held Tuesday mornings in October from 9:30am until 11am on Oct 6, Oct 13, Oct 20 and Oct 27. Computer skills are helpful but not necessary. Due to limited space, sign-ups are necessary. Call the library at 697-7030.
On Monday, October 19, the Canastota Librateens will hold a reception to show off their newly decorated teen room. The reception will begin at 3pm.
Wednesday, October 21 at 7pm, the library will hold a special presentation on The Loomis Gang. Learn about this notorious family of outlaws that operated in Central New York from local descendent, Robert Loomis. The event will be held in the Lawson Community Room. Light refreshments will be served.
