To the Editor:
I’ve had the absolute pleasure of knowing Jim Zophy for the past 15 years. During this time our relationship has transformed from him being a mentor of sorts to him being one of my most valued friends.
When I was young, I got to see first hand how Jim cared and loved for his family. He took on the role of a father figure in many circumstances to individuals who weren’t so lucky as to have this. Always, he preached the value of doing things the right way, being honest and taking accountability for your actions.
Moreover, as time went on I was lucky enough to see how Jim demanded the respect of those under his command. In my opinion, this leads to a healthy and productive unit. There is no doubt in my mind the ability of Jim Zophy to handle any responsibility to come his way.
Over the summer and fall of both 2007 and 2008 I spent nearly six days a week by Jim’s side. During this time we coached Pop Warner together. Jim demanded accountability from the young men we coached and instilled a discipline and focus in them necessary for success. The children were successful on the field as well as in the classroom, strongly in my opinion, due to the guidance of Jim.
While together Jim once told me that he was amazed how far I had come as a human being. This sincerely meant a great deal to me. Someone I respected so much was willing to offer such kind words to a young man that might have just put a few of those grey hairs on his head or made a few of those hairs that are gone fall out.
There is no individual that I think is more qualified, competent and composed of the necessary core values to be successful than Jim Zophy. Come time to vote this November I will certainly cast my vote for Jim, and I can only hope that all of you do too. Envisioning the streets of Madison County under the guidance of Jim will help me sleep better at night and I hope it does for you too.
Sincerely,
Brett Findlay, Canastota
