(Canastota, NY) Nearly 160 high school students attended the FBLA District 7 Fall Meeting held on Friday, October 30 at the Utica School of Commerce in Utica, NY. Twenty- two students from Canastota High School’s Future Business Leaders of America organization attended the five-hour meeting.
While at the District Meeting, the members attended workshops on topics such as: Positive Image, Internet and Social Networking Safety, Business Writing, Public Speaking, Leadership, Parliamentary Procedure, and Advertising. Many workshop presenters are professionals in the field and have worked closely with youth leadership groups.
Canastota High School senior, Mickelle Funari, presented a workshop on scrapbooking. Preparing an annual scrapbook is the process by which local FBLA chapters “showcase” their program of work and enter the Chapter of the Year competition in April.
The New York State Program of Work was also presented to the membership. This year’s NYS theme is “Turning Your Vision Into Reality.” The New York State Charity is “The Ronald McDonald House Charities.” Sue Minard from the Syracuse area Ronald McDonald House spoke to the group about their organization. The area chapter presidents met to discuss the year’s program and to coordinate ideas and events that they would like to see sponsored throughout the year.
Tamika Tolliver, a Canastota High School senior, serves as our state vice president for District 7 and was responsible for coordinating the event. Erick Wells, a senior from Canastota High School serves as the State Parliamentarian and assisted Tamika with the event.
During the meeting interviews were held for district level positions. Justin Gibson-Faber, Bobbi Jo Hannan, Josh Bazan, and Laura Palamara will all be serving as district level officers for the 2009-2010 year.
Future Business Leaders of America is a national organization that involves nearly 250,000 members in over 13,000 chartered chapters worldwide. The mission of FBLA is to bring business and education together in a positive working relationship through innovative leadership and career development programs. New York State is represented by 15 districts. District 7 members include Madison, Oneida, and Herkimer counties.
