To the editor:
If you follow what is going on at the federal, state and county levels, you will hear the warning being sounded of some extremely difficult financial times coming. At the local level, this will mean less sales tax from the county, lower Consolidated Highway Program (CHIPS) payments, higher fees, higher pension costs – belt-tightening across the board.
These are times when we have to have someone who understands working within a budget, the budget process itself, knows how to pay bills, and someone who has the ability to find new resources in the way of grants.
Recently, I have completed a grant-writing course at Madison-Oneida BOCES. I am now taking the advanced class. What this means is, as part of my duties, I will write municipal grants for the town for equipment, building improvements and for upcoming mandates.
This will directly lower your taxes and help us improve the roads.
My experience is as follows:
20 years’ supervisory and machine maintenance experience, including payroll and parts inventory
10 years’ operation of a successful log home business, including project management
Six years’ seasonal employee experience for the Brookfield Highway Department
One term as a town councilman
I am also a tax preparer and notary public
I coached Brookfield Little League for three years and helped build the Brookfield Park when it was new. Others will know me from the hundreds of papers I have notarized over the years at no charge.
To clarify some statements I’ve heard while out knocking on more than 1,000 doors, my log home business is not full-time. This will allow me to be on the job and working as hard as any highway superintendent Brookfield has ever had.
I have been endorsed by the Republican, Independence and Conservative parties. At the local level, this means smaller, less costly, more responsive government. Everyone will be treated fairly and with respect. I will provide calm, effective leadership. I’m asking for your vote November 3.
Daniel J. O’Brien (R,C,I – Brookfield Highway Superintendent Candidate)
