Wilson, Oakes Earn Weekly Honors

Joe Wilson Named ECAC Hockey Rookie of the Week

By Matt Faulkner, Assistant Director of Athletic Communications

(Albany, Jan. 3, 2012) After a huge weekend against Cornell with two goals and two assists for four points, Joe Wilson was selected as the ECAC Hockey Rookie of Week on Tuesday.

Wilson had his best weekend of the year with four points on two goals and two assists. He tallied the gamewinner late in the first period in a 2-1 win at Cornell and then started a four-goal period with a breakaway goal earlier in the third period to propel the Raiders to a 5-3 win and its first sweep over Cornell since 2003-04. His game-winner was a one-timer from the slot, while his second of the weekend was a stick check and steal on a forecheck and then beat Cornell’s Andy Iles on a breakaway. He finished with a plus-3 on the weekend.

The North Syracuse, N.Y., native ranks ninth among rookies in the conference with 13 points on seven goals and six helpers. His seven scores are third among first-year skaters. The rookie is riding a four-game point streak with six points in the four games. Three of the six points have come as goals and one was a gamewinner.

Wilson and the Raiders will be back on the road this weekend with visits to Union and Rensselaer. Colgate will be facing the Engineers and Dutchmen for the first time since eliminating both schools in last year’s ECAC Hockey playoffs.

Oakes Named PL Player of the Week

By Jeremiah Hergott, Director of Athletic Communications

(Center Valley, Pa. – Jan. 30, 2012) Colgate senior Tricia Oakes was named the Patriot League Anaconda Player of the Week following her performance against Lafayette and Holy Cross. This is the second time Oakes has received this honor and is the fifth weekly award for the Raiders this season.

Oakes exploded for quite possibly the finest week of her career, as she averaged 21.5 points and 13.5 rebounds per game during a 1-1 stretch for Colgate. She collected a career-high 25 points and 17 rebounds in Saturday’s 74-69 win over Holy Cross, snapping a 10-game skid against the Crusaders and giving the Raiders just their fourth victory in 47 meetings between the two.

She opened the week with 18 points and 10 rebounds for a double-double in Wednesday’s 66-58 loss at Lafayette. Oakes now has four double-doubles on the season and became just the fifth Raider ever to score more than 800 points and secure over 500 rebounds in a career.

Colgate will head to the Nation’s Capital to face American on Saturday, Feb 4. The game is scheduled to begin at 2:00 p.m. and will be streamed live on Patriot League All-Access.

It’s Not Too Late!

Healthy Communities

By Jennifer McGohan

(Wampsville, NY – Jan. 2012) Anyone who has not already been vaccinated for flu is urged to get their annual shot to reduce their risk for flu. During the last few flu seasons, flu activity increased in January, peaked in late February or early March and continued into May.

This means it is not too late to get your flu shot! Immunity against the flu develops two weeks after vaccination, providing protection against the flu for the rest of the flu season and during spring vacation!

Each year, 30 to 40 percent of all children are infected with the flu, and those with chronic medical conditions like asthma are more likely to develop serious complications. In addition, children are often responsible for spreading the flu to family members and others in the community more than any other group.

Other populations at high risk of flu complications include:

* Pregnant women

* Adults 50 years of age or older

* People with certain chronic medical conditions

* People in nursing homes, assisted living or other long-term care facilities

* People who live with or care for those at high risk for flu complications

* Healthcare workers

“Don’t let a routine visit to a health care provider be a missed chance for a flu vaccination,” said Public Health Director Eric Faisst. “Now is not too late to get vaccinated and to protect yourself this flu season.”

Symptoms of influenza can include fever, chills, severe headache and muscle aches, as well as cough or sore throat. Symptoms of influenza may be similar to cold symptoms, but come on stronger and more quickly.

Although getting vaccinated is the best way to prevent getting sick with the flu, make sure to wash your hands regularly and disinfect surfaces like desktops and telephones. Eating healthy foods, getting enough rest and exercise can also help protect against the flu.

View the Health Department clinic schedule online and get more information about the flu at healthymadisoncounty.org.

Whitmarsh Exhibit to be Held Feb. 4 through 29

Whitmarsh

Born in Cuyler, New York, Tom Whitmarsh spent 37 years as an engineer in Alaska. His Exhibit, “Alaskan Art” will be on display at the New Woodstock Free Library through February 29. Whitmarsh is now a resident of DeRuyter.

New Woodstock Free Library news

By Norm Parry

(New Woodstock, NY – Feb. 2012) A collection of works by multitalented and storied artist Tom Whitmarsh will be on display at the New Woodstock Free Library Feb. 4 through 29. There will be a reception for the artist from 10 a.m. to noon Saturday, Feb. 4.

Originally from Cuyler, Whitmarsh spent 37 years as an engineer in Alaska, where he discovered the northwest coast native wood carving traditions. He added wood carvings to his developing painting pursuits and began selling and exhibiting his works in local Alaskan art shows.

He retired to DeRuyter in 2009. His most recent works include scenes from the local landscape.

Though he had very little formal art training, Whitmarsh’s paintings and carvings show an engineer’s eye for detail and structure. His wood pieces are visually dramatic and arresting. His paintings express his close connection with the mysteries of the wilderness and the harsh realities of life in the great outdoors.

“We are delighted to present this truly iconic collection of works by our new neighbor Tom Whitmarsh, who has chosen to settle here in retirement,” said library exhibits Chairwoman Nancy Edwards. “The scope and variety of this collection is truly remarkable. Some of the works are of imposing size and all are strikingly original.

“Our community will have the opportunity to enjoy the unusual and fascinating works Tom has brought with him from his long sojourn in Alaska. Tom Whitmarsh the man and Tom Whitmarsh the artist are both people you’ll love to meet. This is one of Tom’s first big shows in New York, and it’s a must-see event for those who appreciate unusual art and native creativity.”

For more about Tom Whitmarsh and samples of his works, visit midyork.org/newwoodstock; for more information on any library event or service, call 315-662-3134, or visit the library web page. Find and “Like” the library on Facebook.

Norm Parry is library director for the New Woodstock Free Library. The library is open Monday through Friday from 1 to 5 p.m., Monday and Wednesday evenings 7 to 9 p.m. and Saturdays from 10 a.m. to 1 p.m.

Lost Hikers Rescued from Park

(Town of Fenner, NY – Jan. 2012) A few tense moments ended in skilled rescue at Chittenango Falls State Park on State Route 13 Jan. 28. Sheriff’s deputies and state park police received a call reporting two hikers lost in the park just before 6 p.m.

Upon arrival, Deputies communicated with the Madison County 911 Center to get a better location of the hikers, as 911 Center personnel were in contact with one of the hikers via cell phone. Deputies drove their vehicles in the area with their emergency lights on until the hikers could see the flashes of the emergency lights, and made their way to the side of a sharp, steep hill that parallels Chittenango Creek, just north of the main park entrance.

Deputies established communication with the pair and provided instructions so they would remain safe. Chittenango, along with North Chittenango, Cazenovia and Lincoln Fire Departments responded when the call for a rope rescue was issued.

An aerial ladder truck from Chittenango Fire Department was deployed; rescuers extended the ladder over the very fast flowing creek. Rope rescue personnel crossed the creek and climbed up the hill on the other side, guiding the hikers across the ladder and to a waiting ambulance.

The hikers, Brian Abramowitz of Commack and Jenna Goldberg of Jericho, both 22, were evaluated on the scene by Cazenovia Area Volunteer Ambulance Corp due to their prolonged exposure. They were not transported to a hospital as both refused further medical treatment.

The hikers had been trying to find their way out of the park for nearly three hours when they called 911 for help.

2012 Colgate Women’s Hockey Promotes Autism Awareness Project

Colgate University news

(Hamilton, NY – Feb. 2012) The Colgate women’s hockey team will partner with Autism Speaks, ViewSonic and Goals for Good in its 2012 Autism Awareness Project. The Raiders will launch the 2012 project with their annual Light Up Starr Rink Blue event that will take place Feb. 3 in its ECAC Hockey matchup against Union at 7 p.m.

“We are thrilled to continue our work with Autism Speaks, and have added some great new partners this year,” Head Coach Scott Wiley. “We really wanted to build on the momentum we created in 2011 by adding new and exciting elements to the project through new partnerships and initiatives. This year we added ViewSonic and Goals for Good as partners, and we look forward to working with them to achieve this year’s goals: to raise $30,000, broaden our outreach efforts and provide resources and networking for people on the autism spectrum.”

The team will partner with Autism Speaks once again this season. Last year, Colgate partnered with Autism Speaks U and established a Colgate chapter to support the work of Autism Speaks, North America’s largest autism science and advocacy organization.

“I am excited to attend the second annual event and thankful to the Colgate women’s hockey team for organizing this event,” said Autism Speaks’ Walk-Events Manager Melissa Zavorski. “The team’s efforts to raise awareness of autism at Colgate University are so greatly appreciated. Autism Speaks is dedicated to changing the future for all who struggle with autism spectrum disorders; our mission includes funding autism research, developing family services tools, raising awareness and advocating for autism treatments to be covered by insurance.

“The Autism Awareness Project is such a wonderful example of how students can raise awareness in their community, and we can’t thank the Colgate women’s hockey team enough for their efforts.”

One of two new partners to the project this season is consumer electronic company, ViewSonic, which will be donating five Viewbook 10e tablet computers to the project. These tablet computers will be given to families in need of a communication device for their family member on the spectrum.

“For ViewSonic to be able to donate to a worthy cause is goodness and fulfilling unto itself,” said Jeff Volpe, ViewSonic President of Americas and father of sophomore forward Taylor Volpe. “But for our tablet technology to make a difference in a person’s life beyond work and play is incredible. We are grateful and proud to be associated with Colgate which has been such an advocate and leader in the Autism Awareness Project this past year.”

The second new partner added to the project this year is Goals for Good, an initiative created in 2011 by senior Kevin McNamara from the Colgate men’s hockey team. The mission of the project is to provide a vehicle inspiring people to donate to chosen non-profit organizations through collegiate ice hockey competition.

Men’s and women’s ECAC hockey teams have partnered with a charity and Goals For Good hopes to bring an increased amount of aid and awareness to these charities this season.

“I think that it is great that the men’s team (Colgate) and Goals For Good is going to be involved with the Autism Awareness Project,” McNamara said. “The women’s team has always done an outstanding job with this project, and my teammates and I are hoping we can help.

“Coach Wiley was instrumental in helping Goals For Good get off of the ground, and we always spoke about teaming the Autism Awareness Project and Goals For Good together. We are all very excited about the upcoming games, auctions and raffles to raise money and awareness for these causes.”
